Creatures with the “Breath of Life” are affected by death, the penalty for Adam’s SIN! Nephesh!

In addition to the classification system for living organisms, the Bible also separates what scientists call “higher” animals from all others.  The word used in Scripture is “nephesh” and is most often translated as “soul.”  It is also defined as the “breath of life.” God told Noah which creatures to take on the Arkand based on these instructions we conclude, animals that breathe will be saved in the ark, and those that are left outside will drown in the flood.  Since Insects do not breathe but absorb oxygen through other means, they do not have the breath of life(lungs). Insects can stay underwater for long periods of time, and a majority spend part of their life cycle in water. Insects did not go on the Ark but survive in the flood waters.

Now we define animal death as opposed to plant death. Plants don’t die in the same way the soul animals do.  For example; when you eat fruit like an orange you do not destroy its life in the seed because even if the seed passes through an organism’s body, it still has life. Plant it and watch it grow.  That is not true when you eat the chicken sandwich. The chicken has given up its life.

When the Bible talks about death as the penalty for sin, it refers to the death ofhumans and the creatures that have soul life, not insects or plants.  As people, we recognize this and grieve when a loved one dies.   We know in our hearts this is not the way life is supposed to be and that knowledge is part of our being made in God’s image. Watch an animal special on TV and see the lion take down a zebra, kill it and begin to eat it. Other zebras don’t grieve the death of one of the herb because they don’t have an awareness ofdeath as sin’s penalty and they are not made in God’s image.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nephesh (נֶ֫פֶשׁnép̄eš) is a Biblical Hebrew word which refers to the aspects of sentience, and human beings and other animals are both described as having nephesh. Plants, as an example of live organisms, are not referred to in the Bible as having nephesh. The term נפשis literally “soul,” although it is commonly rendered as “life” in English translations…  In Genesis 2:7 the text is that Adam was not given a nephesh but “became a living nephesh…” Nephesh, when put with another word, can detail aspects related to the concept of nephesh; with רוּחַrûach (“spirit”) it describes a part of men that is immaterial, like mind, emotions, will, intellect, personality, and conscience, Job 7:11.

Biblical use:  The word nephesh occurs 754 times in the Hebrew Bible. The first four times it is used exclusively to describe animals: Gen 1:20 (sea life), Gen 1:21 (great sea life), Gen 1:24 (land creatures), Gen 1:30 (birds and land creatures).

Biblical reasons for the Young Earth Creation Position!

As we begin a new year, I felt it appropriate that I start with two Biblical reasons why I take the “Young Earth Creation” (YEC) position. I do NOT take it because of science since science is an interpretation of evidence, and can change as new evidence appears. I use ONLY Biblical reasoning when someone asks about my “Young Earth” position. Science does, in fact, verify the young Earth, but that’s not the question I’ll answer here. The two Biblical reasons are:

1) The Bible is clear that death was a direct result of Adam’s sin, yet all the “old Earth” positions have death in the creation long before Adam’s sin because they accommodate the long ages REQUIRED for Evolution. Their proponents argue that the death that came by Adam was only spiritual death, however, then you have to explain how we can have a better place in the new Heaven and Earth than Adam had if animal death was present in Eden. Remember in the new creation (a restored Eden); “the lion will lie down with the lamb.”  All the animals will be herbivores. That could not happen in the “old Earth” world before Adam appeared because animals would have killed and eaten each other. God would have used death and struggle as a POSITIVE process to gain improvement in all the old Earth scenarios. Death then would be a creative process employed by God. That’s what Evolution and NOT what the Bible says about death. A God, who uses death as a creative force, is NOT the God of Scripture!!!

2) At the end of each day of creation, God says his creative process is good. At the end of the sixth day, Scripture states: “Then God saw everything that He hath made, and behold it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.” Genesis 1:31 EVERYTHING was VERY GOOD. This expression implies a perfect Creation with no sin, death, rebellion, etc.  Most “old Earth” processes have the fall of Satan, death, sin, and all other kinds of imperfection present before the end of day six. That would imply that the clear statement of Scripture either wasn’t “everything that He had made” or it wasn’t “very good.” In the last chapter of Revelation, Jesus says: “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” No more death! Everything is “very good.” You can’t have any form of imperfection before the end of the sixth because its presence would be in direct conflict with the clear words of Scripture “everything was very good.”

How do you get an age of 6,000 years from the Bible?

The Bible gives a chronological account of history starting at the beginning. If you count back using the genealogies and from known history, you get a creation date of 4004 BC. Bishop Ussher calculated this from the genealogies in Genesis. So, the total age of the Universe is slightly more than 6000 years.

Two Approaches to Teach Your Children Biblical Truth

Now that my third book in Christian Apologetics is launched I’ve decided my next project will deal with Christian Education.  The tentative titles are: My Christian Children’s Education, What Should I Do?  Addressing Christian Parent’s Dilemma of How to Educate Their Children.  Today, from my draft, I’ve included two approaches to teach your children Biblical truth.  Children of believing parents are responsible for instructing them from birth in God’s Truth and Word.  The first is an illustration of the power of God’s Word.  The second a “how to” lesson from one of my mentors that can be very effective teaching method.

One of my responsibilities early in my Christian life at Mitchel Road Presbyterian Church in Greenville, SC was teaching the high school class. On Sunday, the lesson was on Jesus teaching about building your house on the rock or the sand from Matthew 7:24–27

The materials included little, fold-up, paper houses and pages with pictures of sand and rock. Although I thought this was poorly prepared teaching, never the less I taught it faithfully. I even told Terry (my wife and helpmate) on the ride home that it I thought it was a stupid lesson. Years later, I met one of the students from that class. He said, “Mr. Liebert, do you remember teaching the lesson about the two houses—one built on sand and the other built on rock?” I confirmed I remembered thinking to myself “That stupid lesson.” He said:  “Well, that lesson changed my life!” Lesson learned! Never sell short God’s ability to use weak vessels to carry out his will. And don’t trust your judgment regarding what God can do when you are faithful.

REMEMBER BOTH  1) There is no “stupid” in God’s vocabulary and 2) God’s Word has transforming power.

A great idea I got from one of my mentors was his daily review of TV newscasts with his children.  In the early evening, his children would be sent to do homework, and he would watch and videotape the news of the day.  He would pick out several stories and note the times on the tape.  The four children, ages 10 to 16 would come down for the family time each night about 7:00.  They would spend about 20 minutes reading Scripture and prayer.  Then he would play one of the stories from the tape and ask each child what Gods Word said about the content of the news report.  This interaction with the current news was a great learning time both because of his instruction but also the peer-to-peer communication between the four children.  He often created contention by asking “loaded” questions to get them to think about real spiritual issues.  For example, several of the children were doing a summer project reading “Les Misérables,” He asked: “Is it OK to steal bread if you are starving?” This question resulted in six days of lively evening discussions!   He shared one particular video news case with me.  The story was a home invasion where the homeowner shot and killed the intruder.  They all got into a lively discussion that lasted more than 2 hours.  The question they debated became: “When and if is it justifiable to take another person’s life.”  Years later the then 12-year-old would tell his father that story was a life-changing discussion because he realized for the first time how precious God views every human life.

The Christian’s Biblical Responsibility to Teach Their Children God’s Wisdom.

This week I begin a series that addresses Christian parent’s responsibility to educate their children.  I speak with some life experience, having two children and five grandchildren.  My wife Terry and I became Christians in 1977 when I was 35.  In 1995, I joined the Board of Caldwell (Classical, Christian, Community) Academy (CCCA) in Greensboro, NC, one year after its founding and served for three years.  During that time Caldwell moved to a permanent facility and we saw the student body more than double.  Leaving the board in 2001, I taught at CCCA for three years before beginning teaching at the Community College level where I still teach today.  You can see Caldwell CCC Academy today at

If God gave you children, then he also gives you responsibility for their instruction.  As a parent, one of your PRIMARY responsibilities is your children’s education. Before you can begin teaching your children, you must learn God’s wisdom yourself from the primary source, the Bible.  Since we are God’s creation we must understand the nature and character of God.  This gaining of wisdom is a cycle of study, learning and teaching.  It requires effort!  In Romans 12:1-2 we are told it happens by the renewing the mind, personal STUDY! Your work is to take your thinking and bring it from your sinful self to more and more knowledge of God.  This transformation impacts our behavior as we are changed more and more into the image of Christ.  By building a foundation of our spiritual depth we can begin to instruct our children.  In the Bible verses below, you will see it is our effort combined with faith in the Scriptures brings us greater wisdom.  We can only teach what we know and understand so, the more we grow the greater our ability to impart wisdom to our children.  Remember it’s not just what we teach it’s more how we live.  Our actions often speak louder than our words so we MUST let the truth transform us.  Do not say to your children: “Do what I say not what I do!”  Say to them:  ”Watch me and do what I do!”  A living example has far more influence than instruction alone.  Read these Bible verses carefully to see the importance of wisdom!

Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Psalm 119:66 Teach me good judgment and knowledge, for I believe in your commandments.

Proverbs 4:13 Keep hold of instruction; do not let go; guard her, for she is your life.

Proverbs 9:9 Instruct a wise man, and he will be still wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.

Ezra 7:10 For Ezra had set his heart to study the Law of the Lord, and to do it and to teach his statutes and rules in Israel.

Romans 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

2 Corinthians 10:5 We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God and take every thought captive to obey Christ,

James 1:5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.

A Christian parent’s response to US Public Education’s Humanist foundations.

In the early part of the 20th century, the foundation of teaching was “Judeo/Christian Values.” These values undergirding most subjects, particularly history, social studies and science, all were based on Biblical principles. The system NOT was specifically Christian, but teaching was based on Biblical presuppositions and worldview. For example, when morality was addressed in any subject area the Ten Commandments was the foundation cited and was often posted in classrooms. Education began to change in the 1920s with the adoption of John Dewey’s Humanist principles. By the 1950s Humanist principles dominated. Prayer was banned from public schools in 1964. By 1970 the Humanist philosophy was firmly entrenched, and Christian beliefs were being driven out. By the 1980s all residue of Biblical teaching was not only removed from the schools but was banned under the banner of “separation of church and state.” Between the period preceding World War 2 (1940) and the early 1980s, education’s foundations changed from values based on absolute standards from the Bible to a relativistic morality system based on the Humanism and the Humanist Manifesto. These two worldviews are always at opposite positions on every aspect of our lives and the world. The chart enclosed with this blog is a summary of the contrast between them.

Humanism is a system of doctrine that appears religious; however, humanists deny this and call their system secular humanism to remove the stigma of it being a religious system. Calling Humanism non-religious is a smoke screen because the “Humanist Manifesto” contains multiple religious statements. In several cases before the US Supreme Court Humanism has been defined as a religion. Here’s a summary.

Humanism is a progressive philosophy of life that, without theism and other supernatural beliefs, affirms our ability and responsibility to lead ethical lives of personal fulfillment that aspire to the greater good of humanity.

They have several creedal statements, the latest of which is “Humanist Manifesto 3,” (2003), however “Humanist Manifesto 2” (1973) is much more comprehensive.

Christians who send their children to public schools need to recognize that Humanist presuppositions are the foundation of all subjects their children are taught. In my blog of 3/10/2017, we saw this even in language and math! Christian parents putting their kids in US public schools must carefully monitor their children’s knowledge and values. The church loses many students from Christian homes because of this Humanist foundation in education. Parents have to work hard to counter Humanist teaching. When children, who are brought up in Christian homes, go to college or just out on their own, they often “lose” their faith. I’ve counseled many parents whose child has returned from the first year of college to declare, “I don’t believe all that stuff about Jesus anymore!”  Many college professors work hard to destroy Christian students’ faith so they MUST be prepared BEFORE they graduate high school. Ken Ham has written several books, which I recommend, about losing these students.  Already Gone, Already Compromised and Ready to Return all by Ken Ham

Blood Plasma, Modeling the Holy Spirit

Last week I started a series of BLOGs dealing with the nature of blood, and it’s portrayal of Spiritual Truth. Blood in Scripture is the source of life: “the life of the flesh is in the blood.” Blood sacrifices were used to atone for sin and in rites of purification, and finally, the blood of Christ brings everlasting life to those that believe. The three-fold nature of blood is 1) plasma (mostly water), 2) red cells (the bearers of life, oxygen) and the 3) Immune and protection system (clotting agents and immune system components).   Today, I’ll deal with the part of the blood, called the Plasma.

To live our bodies need oxygen, water, sleep and food, and protection (safety). Each one has a time limit for how long we can live without it. I call this the rule of 8s and the limits are: oxygen – 8 minutes, water – 80 hours, sleep – 8 days, food – 80 days, protection – unlimited. Plasma is mostly water and makes up 55% of the blood, and it carries dissolved nutrients to the cells of the body. Our bodies are sustained by these nutrients but the source of life is the oxygen carried by the red blood cells (next week) because we would die without it no matter how much of the others we had available. The Plasma is the carrier of life, but NOT the life itself. Also, Plasma carries nutrition (water and food) and all the other components of blood to all the cells of the body.   It also carries waste products to the kidneys. Every cell must have direct contact with the blood, or it will die. The source of life is oxygen carried by the red blood cells, but plasma contains nutrients to sustain life. Study Jesus on the vine and the branches.

The Holy Spirit is like Plasma since it is the carrier and sustainer of life but NOT the life itself. He is like water poured out to bring God’s message to us. His preparation is essential to prepare us to hear the Gospel. For more insight see my exposition of the raising of Lazarus on pages 7-9 in my book: Always Be Ready to Give an Answer! available at He is God’s agent to accomplish God’s will, so He brings life and sustains it just like the water in the blood and also removes the toxic things that prevent us from spiritual growth. Our sanctification is His work in us as we grow in Christ! He brings us the good things we need and takes away the toxic things we need to eliminate. May God bless His work in you!

Here are some verses that will help you see these concepts. Look them up! Joel 2:28-29, Acts 2:17-18, John 4:14, and Revelation 21:6

Revelation 22:17 and the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that hears say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.

ALL democratic nations become corrupt and fall because of human depravity. NO exceptions.

No nation governed by men will survive long range. Eventually, a society becomes corrupt and fails because human depravity continues to increase. This decay comes from within as depravity takes control of the political system. No nation in history is exempt, not even Israel. The United States today, in the early part of the twenty-first century, is in the last stages of this life cycle. Unless revival comes, collapse is imminent.

We saw in the last two weeks the founding principles of a nation influences how successful that society is. Biblical principles will always be a better foundation, however, even nations with the best foundations pass through this life cycle. No country is exempt! In the Bible, the book of Judges chronicles this again and again for Israel. This Alexander Fraser Tytler quote illustrates how this cycle applies to nations:

Democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations from the beginning of history has been about two hundred years. During those two centuries, those nations always progressed through the following sequence:

  1. From bondage to spiritual faith;
  2. From spiritual faith to great courage;
  3. From courage to liberty;
  4. From liberty to abundance;
  5. From abundance to complacency;
  6. From complacency to apathy;
  7. From apathy to dependence;
  8. From dependence back into bondage.

This quotation is attributed to Tytler but also has been to Alexis de Tocqueville.

The United States today is living out these principles. In 2014, 44 percent of the population required some form of government subsidy payment to remain solvent. When that percentage gets to half of the population, the controlling politicians will be able to sustain their power indefinitely because of the majority’s dependency. When Margaret Thatcher took control of Great Britain, it was on the brink of collapse because of that societies dependence. She dramatically cut spending and became very unpopular, but retained power. Britain was turned around by her policies. One of her most famous quotes is, “Socialism is great as long as you don’t run out of other people’s money!” (Editor’s Comment: When Thatcher refers to socialism, she’s referring to redistribution of wealth based on high taxation). France today faces the same problem because it taxes its wealthy citizens at a rate of 75 percent. Without a significant change in how we redistribute wealth, we’re going to continue to follow this cycle downward. Dependency is the path to bondage.
