Share the Gospel this Christmas by reading my short story “The Memory Tree” to your family. It’s on Kindle.

“The Memory Tree” is a short Christmas story written by Charlie Liebert.  Reading it to your family is an easy and effective way to share the gospel at Christmas dinner or when you tell stories around the tree. It can be read in about 15 minutes. Some readers have used the story as a script to tell the story as a skit or play.

Can a Christmas tree planted, more than 50 years ago, in memory of Ruth and Barry’s grandfather speak to their father, Harry?  Harry’s been bitter for years about the death of his wife Charlotte on Christmas Eve.  Harry’s memory went back to that afternoon 28 years before. Charlotte shouting; “Harry!” as the truck suddenly appeared out of the rain.  The sound of the crash was deafening.  Harry awoke, aware of being wet and some hands on his shoulder.  The awful pain in his back made everything seem fuzzy.  He heard someone say, “This one’s still alive, but the woman’s dead.”

His grandson Barry poked him, and he came back to the present.  Before he continued telling the story, he asked, in his mind: “How could a God that loves us let Charlotte die?”  He’d never gotten an answer he could accept.

He continued: “Why did one tree have to die for the other to live?” He asked the children, unsure himself of the answer.  All the bitterness of the years came back suddenly, and he felt tears well up in his eyes.

“That’s what Charlotte said, ‘He had to die to give us life,'” he almost shouted.  He understood that the tree had a message for him all along.  All these years he hadn’t seen it.  Jesus had to die so we could live.  We couldn’t sacrifice ourselves, we weren’t worthy, but He was worthy to pay our debt.  Now it was clear, Jesus had died to give Harry life.  “O Lord how could I have been so blind!!  I need you, Jesus,” he thought.

Author’s Note: Pause, if necessary to clarify the Gospel.[

Ten years later Harry lay on the bed overlooking the backyard.  The tree was now old like him and ready to die.  The last ten years had been kind to him, and he had many chances to share Jesus.  But now the end was almost here.  It looked like another winter storm.  In the darkening sky, the wind blew strong.  Just as Harry breathed out his last breath, the wind picked up and the memory tree cracked at the base and fell into the Slazer’s yard.

Richard Slazer was reading in John when he heard the tree fall.  “Verily, verily, I say unto you, except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abides alone; but if it dies, it brings forth much fruit.”  Richard got up from his chair and went out into the yard to look at the fallen tree.  As he looked at the base where it had cracked and broken, he noticed a tiny branch poking its head up through the soil next to the broken stump. Perhaps a new tree will grow in its place, he thought, as he hurried in to escape the coming storm.

Charlie’s Born Again in 1977

This week’s blog shares my short testimony of coming to Jesus in 1977.  More extended versions are in my book “Always Be Ready to Give an Answer!  A Former Atheist’s Personal Christian Evangelism Plan.”

I grew up in the small town of Amityville on Long Island. My parents took my two sisters and me to a large, mainline, liberal church almost every Sunday. At sixteen years old, I became acutely aware of the hypocrisy of the church members. So, I mentally shut off anything the church had to say.  By the time I was twenty-four and approaching completion of my BS in chemistry, I had become a staunch Atheist.  Living in New Jersey and met my future wife, Terry, through one of my roommates, her cousin. We married, had our first child, and moved to Rockland County, NY.  Although marriage had brought some changes, I was falling more and more into sinful practices. We had our second child, and my company moved us to Greensboro, NC. By this time, I was viewing pornography and well on the way to becoming an alcoholic. Terry and I talked seriously about divorce. My life was coming apart, and there seemed to be nothing I could do about it.  We had lost all Sunday family gatherings when we moved to NC so, Sunday became a barren time. In Greensboro, most of our neighbors and fellow workers went to church, so we began to attend an Episcopal church. It was the right place for Terry, the ex-Catholic, and Charlie, the ex-Methodist. Nothing came from the pulpit that challenged either one of us, but there were three families in that church whose lives were very different. I couldn’t explain how, but I knew they were different. We did a Bible study with them called “Edge of Adventure,” and our marriage relationship improved for a short time. The study was over, and we went back to the way it was: bad! Later that year one of the men from that group suggested I attend a men’s weekend retreat in Asheville. Terry encouraged me to go. After all, it was a chance to get away from all my problems.

At the beginning of the weekend, on Thursday, we gave up our watches so we would not be concerned about time. On Friday morning, after breakfast, the first speaker asked three questions. “What is your purpose in life? Where are you going? What does it all mean?” As I sat there, I realized I had no real answers. Yes, I had a wife, two children, a house, and two cars, but I knew that was not the answer. These questions bothered me all weekend. After many talks I hardly remember, I went into the chapel alone on Saturday night because I was so troubled by these issues. I knelt and began to think and remember.

I remembered sitting in the apartment in New Jersey, before I met Terry, with my other roommates, drinking beer and watching Billy Graham on TV. We made great fun of his telling; we were lost sinners and needed Jesus. I remembered a high school friend, Frank, that had witnessed to me when I was working on my MBA.  But now those things suddenly seemed real. I said in my mind, God, if you’re real (and I wasn’t sure if he was), you can have my life because it is an awful mess. (God, true to his word, took it.)

In the next moments, there was someone in the room with me that I could not see, but I felt his presence. Something strange had happened, and I did not know yet what it was.  When I came back home to Greensboro, I came down into the den where Terry was watching TV. Her first reaction was “What happened to you. Did you see God?” There was a change in my countenance that I couldn’t explain. I wasn’t sure, but I too knew something had happened. Going back to my daily routine, I immediately developed an adamant desire to read the Bible. I asked the friend who had invited me to the retreat where I should start. He said the Gospel of John. When I got to John, Chapter 3, where Nicodemus encounters Jesus, I read about being born again. That’s what happened to me! I called my friend, and he confirmed it. Yes, I was born again.

Worldviews and the Uniqueness of Christianity PART 2.

This BLOG is from Chapter 4 “The Uniqueness of Christianity” of:Always Be Ready to Give an Answer!” Last week we saw the three different views of Mankind’s position in this world: 1) God’s not relevant, and death is final. 2) Non-Christian religions escape death by human efforts, and 3) Christianity, God rescues man from death. All three worldviews answer the same question: “What happens to us when we die?” Christianity differs from all other worldviews and religions in a stark way that all humanity is helpless and hopeless in defeating death. All are condemned to Hell by both their nature and action.

The History.

God placed Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden with the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil to test their love and obedience. By not eating from the tree, they could continually demonstrate love for God as an act of their will. They had the choice to not love by disobedience, so they had true free will. God warned them that eating from the tree would have the consequence of death. When Adam ate from the tree, he brought the curse of sin and death to all of the creation. Adam’s spirit died immediately. His body entered the process of dying, but it would be some time before he would physically die. It’s as if God said: “You will begin to die (spiritual death), you will continue to die (aging), and eventually, you will be dead (physical death).

The Dilemma.

The entrance of sin meant all children of Adam and Eve are guilty of this rebellion by both birth and personal practice. We are born sinners, and we sin by intent daily. All mankind is dead in their spirit and will not seek a relationship with God, hating God by nature and practice (Read Romans 1–3). The situation is entirely hopeless. All are destined to Hell, and no one can do nothing to stop their death. If this were the end of the story, Christianity would be the most hopeless religion because there would be no way to escape death. We are all lost, condemned and hopeless, so God alone can provide a solution.

The Good News.

Now, the good news of the gospel! God himself came to earth as Jesus, the perfect man, also called the second Adam. He was not born by the natural process but rather miraculously conceived in the virgin’s womb. As a result is not a son of Adam, and does not inherit the sin nature. His spirit is alive. Jesus lived a perfect life obeying all God’s law and then sacrificed himself to pay the sin debt of some of mankind. Since people will not seek God because they are dead, God himself has to awaken them, to hear the call to receive the payment of their debt made by Jesus. It’s called substitutionary atonement. One life traded for another to satisfy justice. Lazarus in the grave is a great example! See my earlier blog: http://wp.me/p6OUE6-1y

LESSON: Christianity is unique in world religions because it alone teaches man is dead and will not seek God. God alone can provide escape from death and only through Jesus Christ

The Absolute Laws of Science Refute Atheism and Materialism.

You’ve heard Your Atheist, Humanist or Materialist relative or friend say: “I only believe in what I can see. Faith is for fools! The only reality is the material world. There is no supernatural! Everything is relative! There are no absolutes!”

Our world is full of people that deny the supernatural. They make explicit statements about the world and act as if they were questions because they are looking for a response from us.   In the last two weeks, we explored immaterial opposites and history to demonstrate that people who claim they only believe in the material world believe in many things that can’t be sensed. Today we’ll look at the third of these, non-material arguments, absolute scientific laws.

Absolute Scientific Laws

I: “I only believe in what I can see. My five senses tell me all I need to and can know. There is no supernatural; only the material world exists. Faith in something you can’t see is foolish.”

Me: “Do you believe in gravity, the laws of aerodynamics, or thermodynamics?”

I: (Affirms.)

Me: “Do these laws change?”

I: “I don’t know.”

Me: “Have you ever seen them change or know of any time or place they did?”

I: “No.”

Me: “Then we can accept they don’t change. These laws are absolute. The universe has some scientific laws that don’t change.”

I: “But there may be a place in the universe where they do change.”

Me: “That’s an argument from silence and is faulty logic. You are begging the question!”

I: “Okay, there are laws about the physical universe that don’t change.”

Me: There are also rules of morality that don’t change, as we saw above when we talked about justice last week. Your belief that everything is relative is false. There are absolutes in both the physical world and in morality. You agree to believe in things that can’t be sensed, you accept the testimony of others about events you didn’t experience, and the now you agree the universe contains absolutes that are always true. Your view of a purely materialistic reality is false. What you believe about the world isn’t true! None of the things you said you consider to be true are true. You have a worldview that is inconsistent, illogical, and false. I say with confidence; you need to find real answers to your view of reality. My Christian worldview is real, and demonstrable and it contains good news and bad news. First, the bad news: There is a God, who created all things, sustains all things and brings justice to all things. That justice carries a sentence that includes your death and condemnation. No human can escape death! You’re lost and without hope when you stand before that just God! Now the good news: God has provided a way to satisfy his justice, not by anything you can do, but by believing that Jesus paid the debt you could not pay by dying on the cross. Reconciliation to God takes place when you put your trust in Jesus.

Atheists, Agnostics & Materialists have FAITH because they believe History.

These statements are easy to answer and often provide an opportunity to present the gospel. Materialist declarations challenge Christians to spar verbally. Don’t shy away from them; they will give you a chance to share the Gospel.

In the United States today there are many people, even in churches, who believe these materialistic imperatives from Atheism, Agnosticism, Humanism, Materialism, and Marginal Christianity.   All of these worldviews are described in “Worldviews and Religions” from the book Always Be Ready to Give an Answer!

Last week we explored immaterial opposites like hot-cold, wind, and light-darkness to demonstrate that people who claim they only believe in the material world believe in many things that can’t be sensed. Today we’ll look at the second of these non-material arguments, the Historical Narrative dialogue. Our whole understanding of history is based on others writings and experiences and not on our knowledge. WE believe in history by faith in the ones who communicated it to us.

Historical Narratives

I: “I only believe in what I can see. My five senses tell me all I need to and can know. There is no supernatural; only the material world exists. Faith in something you can’t see is foolish.”

Me: “Do you believe George Washington was a real person? Did you ever see him? You only have the testimony of books written by other men.”

I: “Of course.”

Me: “Do you believe there was a Roman Empire? Do you believe two world wars occurred in the twentieth century?” (You can use as many examples as you can think of, just don’t use any events that happened during the person’s lifetime.)

I: “These things are historical events I know happened.”

Me: “You only know about past events that you didn’t witness through the testimony of others. So, you trust in something you did not see. Do you concede you believe history through the testimony of others?

I: (Affirms.)

Me: Then let me tell you some history. The life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ are the most documented events of all time. If the stories about Jesus were not true, we would know because men and women don’t sacrifice their lives for a lie. Besides the testimony of history, we have two-thousand-plus years of history to affirm Jesus’ saving power.” (Give a short testimony.) “What about you? Do you believe Jesus lived, died, and rose from the dead to bring you salvation?”

The material in this blog is from the first chapter in my book ANSWERS For “The Hope That Is In You.”

Share the Gospel of Jesus. You have a bad heart, record, and life. You need a new heart, record, and life.

Last week I shared my testimony of Christ’s life-changing power. After sharing your testimony the next step in the personal evangelism strategy from my book “Always Be Ready to Give an Answer! ” is called “Closure.” This week I learned another way to achieve closure at a CBMC program. Pastor Decherd Stevens from Carlisle Reformed Presbyterian Church shared “A bare bones way to present the Gospel, simple, but full-orbed and Biblical.”

1) You want to show a person’s sinful condition, and need of Christ – You have a bad heart, a bad record & a bad life.

  • You have a bad HEART – Called in Scripture: deceitful, wicked, dead and unable to do anything good. Jeremiah 17:9, Ephesians 2:1-3, John 6:44
  • You have a bad RECORD – You have sinned and are guilty: and therefore stand condemned (to death) before God. Romans 3:10-11, 6:23, John 3:36
  • You have a bad LIFE – You continue to do those things that are displeasing to God and cannot do those things, which please him. Isaiah 64:6, Romans 8:7-8

2) You want to show the only way to hope, and salvation is by faith in Christ – You need a new heart, a new record & a new life.

  • You need a new HEART – You must be born again (John 3:3), made alive (Ephesians 2:1), need to be made a new creature (Corinthians 5:17). But there is a problem; you can’t do that (Jeremiah 13:23). What do you do? Well, only God can change the heart (Ezekiel 36:26). You cry out to Jesus in faith and repentance (Ephesians 2:8). You’re in prison, and ONLY God has the key.
  • You need a new RECORD – You need to be cleansed of past sins, & you can’t do that either, but God can & will if you ask Him: Isaiah 53:6, 1 John 1:9, Hebrews 10:16f, Romans 5:1
  • You need a new LIFE – You need more than forgiveness, you need holiness (Hebrews 12:14). Your whole life needs to change; you need to start hating evil and loving what is good. You need to put off the old man and put on the new. All of these can only be done by the power of God. How does it happen? Ezekiel 36:27, Romans 8:13, 2Corinthians 5:21, 1 John 2:4

The Gospel in 1 Corinthians 15:3 “For I delivered to you…: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures…”

Learn how to start a conversation, by asking good questions. Study Biblical examples: Jesus, give me a drink…: Philip, Do you understand…: Peter, this is what Joel said.

In many US places, everybody thinks they are Christian, so I ask questions like: Are you a Christian? Do you have a church home? Has anyone shared the gospel with you? Do you sense that the Lord is working in your heart? Do you have any desire for God to take away your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh? Would you like to ask him to change you right now?

Give Your Christian Testimony! Charlie Liebert’s Example!

I have been teaching personal evangelism to Christians for years. One of the most important parts of being able to witness to unbelievers is to “be able to give an answer for the hope that is in you.” To be effective prepare a short, five-minute, testimony to carry out your obligation to witness to the life-changing power of Jesus. My blog today is my five-minute testimony.

I grew up in a small town Amityville on Long Island, New York, with my two sisters. My parents took us to church almost every Sunday. In Sunday school, we learned many Bible stories, but I never remember hearing the Gospel. At sixteen years old, in church one Sunday, morning the pastor was droning on about the evil of drinking. I knew that most of the adults sitting around me had been at the Amityville Yacht Club season-opening the night before and had consumed a lot of beer, wine, and liquor. How foolish, I thought. These people don’t believe a word of what’s said! Hypocrites! I was very aware of the hypocrisy of church members, and from that moment I shut off anything the church had to say. Thus, I began my descent into Atheism. By the time I received by BS degree in 1966, I was a hardcore Atheist.

In 1967 I married, Theresa Lee Perrone. We had two children, Keith and Melanie, and in 1973 our family came to Greensboro, North Carolina. Since we left our families in New York and New Jersey, Sundays became a long day. Terry met some neighbors decided to attend an Episcopal church, leaving me home with the children. After several weeks, I also decided to go to that church because; managing two young children at home was difficult for me.

My new life in Greensboro was falling apart quickly. My marriage was faltering, I had a drinking problem, a pornography addiction, and worked for a man I hated. The church we attended held a weekend retreat in Asheville, North Carolina, in 1977, and both Terry and I felt it would be good for me to get away for that short time. As the weekend progressed, I was confronted with the Gospel. Was I a lost sinner? That was very clear to me by the way my life was going, but what could I do about it? Nothing myself, but it became apparent that my sin debt was paid by Jesus’ death on the cross. He could give me new life! Wow! Everything changed. I came back to Greensboro a new person. Terry was converted three months later, and Christ would begin to heal our marriage, change my behavior, and give me a new worldview. Atheism was trashed for a relationship with the living God. The changes in my life were so dramatic my fellow workers joked about the old Charlie vs. the new Charlie. I would describe myself today as “a lost sinner saved by grace.” From a hard-core Atheist, I “evolved” into a Bible believing Christian.

Now, prepare yours and practice it with your believing friends.
