Share the Gospel of Jesus. You have a bad heart, record, and life. You need a new heart, record, and life.

Last week I shared my testimony of Christ’s life-changing power. After sharing your testimony the next step in the personal evangelism strategy from my book “Always Be Ready to Give an Answer! ” is called “Closure.” This week I learned another way to achieve closure at a CBMC program. Pastor Decherd Stevens from Carlisle Reformed Presbyterian Church shared “A bare bones way to present the Gospel, simple, but full-orbed and Biblical.”

1) You want to show a person’s sinful condition, and need of Christ – You have a bad heart, a bad record & a bad life.

  • You have a bad HEART – Called in Scripture: deceitful, wicked, dead and unable to do anything good. Jeremiah 17:9, Ephesians 2:1-3, John 6:44
  • You have a bad RECORD – You have sinned and are guilty: and therefore stand condemned (to death) before God. Romans 3:10-11, 6:23, John 3:36
  • You have a bad LIFE – You continue to do those things that are displeasing to God and cannot do those things, which please him. Isaiah 64:6, Romans 8:7-8

2) You want to show the only way to hope, and salvation is by faith in Christ – You need a new heart, a new record & a new life.

  • You need a new HEART – You must be born again (John 3:3), made alive (Ephesians 2:1), need to be made a new creature (Corinthians 5:17). But there is a problem; you can’t do that (Jeremiah 13:23). What do you do? Well, only God can change the heart (Ezekiel 36:26). You cry out to Jesus in faith and repentance (Ephesians 2:8). You’re in prison, and ONLY God has the key.
  • You need a new RECORD – You need to be cleansed of past sins, & you can’t do that either, but God can & will if you ask Him: Isaiah 53:6, 1 John 1:9, Hebrews 10:16f, Romans 5:1
  • You need a new LIFE – You need more than forgiveness, you need holiness (Hebrews 12:14). Your whole life needs to change; you need to start hating evil and loving what is good. You need to put off the old man and put on the new. All of these can only be done by the power of God. How does it happen? Ezekiel 36:27, Romans 8:13, 2Corinthians 5:21, 1 John 2:4

The Gospel in 1 Corinthians 15:3 “For I delivered to you…: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures…”

Learn how to start a conversation, by asking good questions. Study Biblical examples: Jesus, give me a drink…: Philip, Do you understand…: Peter, this is what Joel said.

In many US places, everybody thinks they are Christian, so I ask questions like: Are you a Christian? Do you have a church home? Has anyone shared the gospel with you? Do you sense that the Lord is working in your heart? Do you have any desire for God to take away your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh? Would you like to ask him to change you right now?

The Memory Tree. A Gospel Christmas Story that can be read to children in about 10 minutes.

The Memory Tree is a Gospel Christmas Story that can be read to children in about 10 minutes. It’s a great read to give to your family for Christmas. The Gospel is very clearly presented.

Can a Christmas tree planted in memory of Ruth and Barry’s grandfather speak to their father, Harry? Harry’s been bitter for years about the death of his wife Charlotte on Christmas Eve years before. He asks, “How could a God that loves us let Charlotte die?” He never got an answer he could accept until he told the story about the memory tree.

“Why did one have to die for the other to live?” He asked the children, unsure himself of the answer. All the bitterness of all the years seemed to come back suddenly, and he began to feel tears well up in his eyes.

“That’s what Charlotte said, ‘He had to die to give us life,'” he almost shouted. He now understood that the tree had a message for him all along. All these years he hadn’t seen it. Jesus had to die so we could live. We couldn’t sacrifice ourselves; we weren’t worthy, but He was. Now it was all clear; Jesus had died to give him life. “O Lord how could I have been so blind!! I need you, Jesus,” he thought.

Richard Slazer was reading in John when he heard the tree fall. “Verily, verily, I say unto you, except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abides alone; but if it dies, it brings forth much fruit.” He got up from his chair and went out into the yard to look at the fallen tree. As he looked at the base where it had cracked and broken. He noticed a tiny branch poking it’s head up through the soil right next to the severed stump. Perhaps a new tree will grow in its place, he thought, as he hurried in to escape the coming storm.

Political Correctness – suppresses critical thinking, muzzles free speech, prevents dialogue and perpetuates lies.

Political correctness is one of the greatest barriers to addressing society’s problems today because it stifles critical thinking, muzzles free speech, prevents dialogues and perpetuates lies. A simple definition of “Political Correctness” (PC) is attitude, behavior or policy that does not offend, distress or upset any group in society who are a unique, religious, political, racial, social, etc.

Solutions to societies problems start with dialogue and critical thinking. To address a problem, first, list all alternatives. In the question of our origin, an Atheist will never consider Theistic Evolution or Biblical Creation and likewise the Christian will not believe Atheistic Evolution. Each one’s inherent bias has eliminated some of the possible answers. Because you don’t like something does not mean it is not a possible solution. Once you list all alternatives, analyze them in depth, listing advantages and disadvantages. Understanding all the aspects of every option, without negative bias, is critical to get the best solution.

One barrier for best solutions is every person’s worldview and presuppositions. Using critical thinking to achieve the best results is possible if one can put aside one’s biases.

So, what is “Political Correctness”? Here’s a simple definition. “You are only allowed to think the way I think. If you don’t, you must be censured and silenced.” In PC the right to offend is ALWAYS eliminated. PC flies in the face of everything we know about freedom and free speech in particular! Another way to say this is: “Only group think is allowed. Don’t think on your own!”

Political Correctness began in the late 1980s as a quick way of conveying concern about the leftist influence in the Universities, media, and culture. PC referred to academic policies that moved the content of the college curriculum away from academic studies into the social modification of student’s behavior. PC is also called “the culture war.”

PC’s underlying concept is that everyone should “be nice” to everyone else and not critical or unkind anyone. To “be PC nice” is absurd and foolish given the diverse nature of humans. PC prevents honest dialogue. A good example of this is the deterioration of race relations in the US from 2008 to 2016. PC has suppressed and prevented any real dialogue between the competing groups and lies and stereotypes on both sides are perpetuated and cause further division. For example, the PCs “white privilege” vs. “black lives matter” vs. “deplorable ones” have made matters worse and have led us away from possible solutions.

PC suppresses speech rather than freeing it and is a clear violation of the principles of the first amendment. “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” It’s time we started to talking to each other about our problems instead of throwing rocks or cursing.

TWO theological reasons Biblical creation REQUIRES 6 ordinary, 24 hour days!

There are the two Biblical reasons why I take the “Young Earth” position. I do NOT take it because of science since science is an interpretation of evidence, and it can change as new evidence appears. I use ONLY Biblical reasoning when someone asks about my “Young Earth” position. Science does, in fact, verify the young Earth, but that’s not the question here. These two Biblical reasons are why the Young Earth is essential to a Christian’s belief.   All other beliefs are Biblically and theological untenable and destroy the veracity of Scripture.

1) The Bible is clear that death was a direct result of Adam’s sin, yet all the “old Earth” positions have death in the creation long before Adam’s sin because they are accommodating the long ages REQUIRED for Evolution. Their proponents argue that the death that came by Adam was only spiritual death, however, then you have to explain how we can have a better place in the new Heaven and Earth than Adam had if animal death was present in Eden. Remember in the new creation (a restored Eden); “the lion will lie down with the lamb.” All the animals will be herbivores. That could not happen in the “old Earth” world before Adam appeared because animals would have killed and eaten each other. God would have used death and struggle as a POSITIVE process to gain improvement in all the old Earth scenarios. Death then would be a creative process employed by God. That’s what Evolution and NOT what the Bible says about death. A God, who uses death as a creative force, is NOT the God of Scripture!!!

2) At the end of each day of creation, God says his creative process is good. At the end of the sixth day, Scripture states: “Then God saw everything that He hath made, and behold it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.” Genesis 1:31 EVERYTHING was VERY GOOD. This expression implies a perfect Creation with no sin, death, rebellion, etc. Most “old Earth” processes have Satan’s fall, death, sin, and all other kinds of imperfection present before the end of day six. That would imply that the clear statement of Scripture either wasn’t “everything that He had made” or it wasn’t “very good.” In the last chapter of Revelation, Jesus says: “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” No more death! Everything is “very good.” You can’t have any form of imperfection before the end of the sixth because its presence would be in direct conflict with the clear words of Scripture “everything was very good.”

The Bible gives a chronological account of history starting at the beginning. If you count back using the genealogies and from known history, you get a creation date of 4004 BC. Bishop Ussher calculated this from the genealogies in Genesis. So the total age of the Universe is about 6000 years.

This analysis of Biblical creation is from my book ANSWERS For “The Hope That Is In You.” which also contains answers to more than100 other questions unbelievers use to try to stump Christians. My first book “Always Be Ready to Give an Answer!” develops an evangelism strategy that gets to the Gospel even when you are stumped by questions like these.

Blog 2016 046. 11/11/16 Evangelize like Jesus did! Ask questions to get to their motives.

The most familiar imperative in the Bible is the Great Commission. Jesus tells his disciples, as he leaves,

“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” — Matthew 28:18b–20

That’s pretty clear. He has all the authority on earth and remains with us by the presence of the Holy Spirit. Our call to action is to make disciples of all nations. Most Christians don’t do it. They are timid or afraid to bring the Gospel to the world around them. Why? What paralyzes them? Fear of not being able to answer those “hard” questions unbelievers ask! Our Enemy, Satan, uses this disabling fear to weaken believers, create doubt, and prevent the spread of the Gospel. Paralyzed by this fear, they withdraw from spiritual warfare and become bystanders. Most of the Christian soldiers I know want to take supporting roles. Few intend to go into the front battle lines to confront the Enemy. Our spiritual war is ineffectively fought because of this fear of being unable to answer questions. This implied assumption that we must respond to these issues immediately is a significant barrier to personal evangelism. So what can we do?

Let’s see how Jesus confronted this. The religious leaders ask Jesus a “trap” question that he is not going to answer, but He responds with a question. He is forcing them to think through their presuppositions when confronted.

And when he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him as he was teaching, and said, “By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?” Jesus answered them, “I also will ask you one question, and if you tell me the answer, then I also will tell you by what authority I do these things. The baptism of John, from where, did it come? From heaven or from man?” And they discussed it among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say to us, ‘Why, then did you not believe him?’ But if we say, ‘From man,’ we are afraid of the crowd, for they all hold that John was a prophet.” So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And he said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.” — Matthew 21:23–27

Jesus didn’t answer their question. He asked that question to expose their motives for asking the original question. He wanted to hear their reason for asking before he’d answer. He was asking the Scribes and Pharisees, “Why did you ask me this question?” After listening to their response, he never answered their question. Jesus forced them to expose the foundations of their beliefs, their presuppositions, and to consider the consequences of their answers. They wouldn’t answer his question. Our goal dealing with questioners is to do the same: expose their foundations. When we know what they believe and their motive for asking the question, we have an opening to bring our witness of Christ to them. This personal evangelism strategy is described in my book “Always Be Ready to Give an Answer!”

Always Be Ready to Give an ANSWER!

Christian, can you answer? “I only have faith in what I can sense.” Part 2

Christians can counter materialistic beliefs by three separate approaches: 1) immaterial opposites, 2) historical narratives and 3) absolute scientific laws. Answers here are given as dialogues to make them simple to understand and easy to implement. This week we tackle the second and third.

Historical Narratives

Me: “Do you believe George Washington was a real person? Did you ever see him? You only have the testimony of books written by other men.”

I: “Of course.”

Me: “Do you believe there was a Roman Empire? Do you believe two world wars occurred in the twentieth century?” (You can use as many examples as you can think of, just don’t use events that happened during the person’s lifetime.)

I: “Yes.”

Me: “You only know about past events that you didn’t witness through the testimony of others. So, you trust in something you did not see. Do you concede you believe history through the testimony of others?

I: “OK.”

Me: “Then let me tell you some history. The life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ are the most documented events of all time. If the stories about Jesus were not true, we would know because men and women don’t sacrifice their lives for a lie. Besides the actual testimony, we have two-thousand-plus years of history to affirm Jesus’ saving power.”

Absolute Scientific Laws

Me: “Do you believe in gravity, the laws of aerodynamics, or thermodynamics?”

I: “Yes.”

Me: Do these laws change?

I: I don’t know.

Me: “Have you ever seen them change or know of any time or place they did?”

I: “No.”

Me: “Then we can accept they don’t change and are absolute. The universe has some scientific laws that don’t change.”

I: “But there may be a place in the universe where they do change.”

Me: “That’s an argument from silence and is faulty logic. You are begging the question!”

I: “Okay, there are laws about the physical universe that don’t change.”

Me: There are also rules of morality that don’t change, as we saw above when we talked about justice. Your belief that everything is relative is false. There are absolutes in both the physical world and in morality.

Summary:

We started off with statements like, “I only believe in what I can see.” “Faith is for fools!” “The only reality is the material world.” “There is no supernatural!” “Everything is relative; there are no absolutes!” But you’ve conceded believing in things you can’t sense, you accept the testimony of others about events you did not experience, and the universe contains absolutes that are always true, which you deny. You view of reality has been falsified. What you believe about the world isn’t true! None of the things you said you believe is true. You have a worldview that is inconsistent, illogical, and false. I tell you with confidence; you need to find real answers to your view of reality. My Christian worldview is real, demonstrable, and absolute!

My book: ANSWERS For “The Hope That Is In You.” contains these answers. My personal evangelism strategy is in my book “Always Be Ready to Give an Answer!”

Christian, can you answer? “I only have faith in what I can sense.” Part 1

Christians can counter materialistic beliefs by three separate approaches: 1) immaterial opposites, 2) historical narratives and 3) absolute scientific laws. Your strategy here is given as dialogue to make it simple to understand and easy to implement. This week we tackle the immaterial opposites, next week the second and third ones.

Immaterial Opposites

Here are some possible materialist statements: “I only believe in what I can see.” “My five senses tell me all I need to and can know.” “There is no supernatural; only the material world exists.” “Faith in something you can’t see is foolish.” (There are many variations of these statements, but you get the idea.)

Me: “You only believe in things you can see, hear, feel, smell, or taste, so then do you believe in darkness?”

Them: “Yes.”

Me: “There is no such thing as darkness. You can’t sense it in any way. Darkness is the absence of light, but it does not exist by itself. How about the wind? Do you believe in the wind?”

Them: “Of course.”

Me: “The wind itself can’t be seen; only its effect. Do you believe in cold? Cold is the absence of heat and can only be defined by the presence of heat.”

Them: Many possible responses.

Me: “How about good and evil? Neither one can be measured or sensed, but we know them when we see them.”

I: Many possible responses. At some point in this dialogue the Inquirer is going to stop you and ask, “Where are you going with this?” or “You are frustrating me.” So, when they ask, we put the pieces together.

Me: “You do believe in many things you can’t sense. Darkness and cold are opposites of things we can measure. We observe the effect of wind, and we can measure it, but we don’t see it. Evil is the absence of good, but what’s the source of good? How do we know what’s right or wrong? What is a conscience? Is morality somehow inside of people?”

“Your child has just done something wrong, and you confront them. Immediately they look guilty but lie to escape punishment. The Family Circus cartoon depicts this behavior with the semi-invisible character “Not Me.” If you deal with children, you know all about “Not Me.”

I: At this point, it’s important to get them to agree to the principles of good and evil.

Me: “Since you believe in the concept of evil, you also must accept the necessity of justice, because bad behavior deserves punishment. As a materialist you believe anyone’s behavior is just the response of the chemistry and electricity in your brain, but what is the source of those moral ideas? Good and evil is another immaterial concept you know and accept.”

Immaterial opposites show that you believe in more than you can sense, but there are two more ways you also go beyond your senses, historical narratives and absolute scientific laws.,

Summary: Even the staunchest materialist has to accept many intangible things that can be defined but not detected or measured. Immaterial opposites are the first of the three flaws in a materialist’s beliefs. Next week we’ll discuss the other two, historical narratives and absolute scientific laws.
