Two Approaches to Teach Your Children Biblical Truth

Now that my third book in Christian Apologetics is launched I’ve decided my next project will deal with Christian Education.  The tentative titles are: My Christian Children’s Education, What Should I Do?  Addressing Christian Parent’s Dilemma of How to Educate Their Children.  Today, from my draft, I’ve included two approaches to teach your children Biblical truth.  Children of believing parents are responsible for instructing them from birth in God’s Truth and Word.  The first is an illustration of the power of God’s Word.  The second a “how to” lesson from one of my mentors that can be very effective teaching method.

One of my responsibilities early in my Christian life at Mitchel Road Presbyterian Church in Greenville, SC was teaching the high school class. On Sunday, the lesson was on Jesus teaching about building your house on the rock or the sand from Matthew 7:24–27

The materials included little, fold-up, paper houses and pages with pictures of sand and rock. Although I thought this was poorly prepared teaching, never the less I taught it faithfully. I even told Terry (my wife and helpmate) on the ride home that it I thought it was a stupid lesson. Years later, I met one of the students from that class. He said, “Mr. Liebert, do you remember teaching the lesson about the two houses—one built on sand and the other built on rock?” I confirmed I remembered thinking to myself “That stupid lesson.” He said:  “Well, that lesson changed my life!” Lesson learned! Never sell short God’s ability to use weak vessels to carry out his will. And don’t trust your judgment regarding what God can do when you are faithful.

REMEMBER BOTH  1) There is no “stupid” in God’s vocabulary and 2) God’s Word has transforming power.

A great idea I got from one of my mentors was his daily review of TV newscasts with his children.  In the early evening, his children would be sent to do homework, and he would watch and videotape the news of the day.  He would pick out several stories and note the times on the tape.  The four children, ages 10 to 16 would come down for the family time each night about 7:00.  They would spend about 20 minutes reading Scripture and prayer.  Then he would play one of the stories from the tape and ask each child what Gods Word said about the content of the news report.  This interaction with the current news was a great learning time both because of his instruction but also the peer-to-peer communication between the four children.  He often created contention by asking “loaded” questions to get them to think about real spiritual issues.  For example, several of the children were doing a summer project reading “Les Misérables,” He asked: “Is it OK to steal bread if you are starving?” This question resulted in six days of lively evening discussions!   He shared one particular video news case with me.  The story was a home invasion where the homeowner shot and killed the intruder.  They all got into a lively discussion that lasted more than 2 hours.  The question they debated became: “When and if is it justifiable to take another person’s life.”  Years later the then 12-year-old would tell his father that story was a life-changing discussion because he realized for the first time how precious God views every human life.

The Christian’s Biblical Responsibility to Teach Their Children God’s Wisdom.

This week I begin a series that addresses Christian parent’s responsibility to educate their children.  I speak with some life experience, having two children and five grandchildren.  My wife Terry and I became Christians in 1977 when I was 35.  In 1995, I joined the Board of Caldwell (Classical, Christian, Community) Academy (CCCA) in Greensboro, NC, one year after its founding and served for three years.  During that time Caldwell moved to a permanent facility and we saw the student body more than double.  Leaving the board in 2001, I taught at CCCA for three years before beginning teaching at the Community College level where I still teach today.  You can see Caldwell CCC Academy today at

If God gave you children, then he also gives you responsibility for their instruction.  As a parent, one of your PRIMARY responsibilities is your children’s education. Before you can begin teaching your children, you must learn God’s wisdom yourself from the primary source, the Bible.  Since we are God’s creation we must understand the nature and character of God.  This gaining of wisdom is a cycle of study, learning and teaching.  It requires effort!  In Romans 12:1-2 we are told it happens by the renewing the mind, personal STUDY! Your work is to take your thinking and bring it from your sinful self to more and more knowledge of God.  This transformation impacts our behavior as we are changed more and more into the image of Christ.  By building a foundation of our spiritual depth we can begin to instruct our children.  In the Bible verses below, you will see it is our effort combined with faith in the Scriptures brings us greater wisdom.  We can only teach what we know and understand so, the more we grow the greater our ability to impart wisdom to our children.  Remember it’s not just what we teach it’s more how we live.  Our actions often speak louder than our words so we MUST let the truth transform us.  Do not say to your children: “Do what I say not what I do!”  Say to them:  ”Watch me and do what I do!”  A living example has far more influence than instruction alone.  Read these Bible verses carefully to see the importance of wisdom!

US Public Education’s Foundations, Christianity vs. Humanism

In a recent blog, I dealt with the two foundations of US Public Education, Christian Values, and Humanism. A comment posted by a reader asked: “What’s wrong with Humanism?” What’s wrong, Humanism’s tenets and foundations conflict with my Christian world in every area: History, Science, Literature and even Language, which I’ll deal with next week. As a Christian I want my children’s education to reflect my values, which begins with a foundation of a worldview and a set of presuppositions about the world where we live. Until in the early part of the 20th century, the US public education’s foundation was the Bible and Christian principles. It began to change in the middle of the 20th century, based on the influence of John Dewey and others. By the end of the 1980s US, education was based entirely on the principles of Humanism. Christianity was purged from the schools under the guise of “separation of church and state.” These two worldviews are at opposite positions on every aspect of our lives, only one can be education’s foundation. They are truly mutually exclusive. Education’s foundation must be based on either one of these value sets, but since it can be ONLY one, the other must be entirely excluded.

Relativistic education without absolutes is fatal to learning.

“Humanist Manifesto II,” promoted by John Dewey, is the foundation for US public education. Children in public schools are taught every subject based on Humanist presuppositions. Here are two examples where language/reading and mathematics remove absolutes and put relativism in its place.:

1) Using phonics to teach language starts with the absolutes—letters and sounds—and progresses to the relative—words and sentence formation. The look/say method begins with the relative and does not build a foundation of letters, so reading skills never fully develop. Look/say readers are frequently poorer readers than those taught by phonics. The absolute has to come before the relative because that’s how God designed it. As a child develops speech, he or she starts with sounds. Listening to a baby test his or her vocals is always interesting. We don’t expect them to begin with words. Word and sentence formation come after the sound development of the letters.

2) In mathematics, particularly Common Core, problem-solving methods are taught with little or no time spent on the mechanics of numbers. The absolutes in math are the numbers and their relationships: adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. Common Core starts with the relative and never teaches the absolutes of the basics of number structure. If you were born before the middle of the twentieth century, you probably remember memorizing the multiplication tables which, along with addition and subtraction, are the absolutes that build the math system all the way to calculus. Without the foundation of numbers and how they function, the mind won’t ever “get it.” Math becomes a mystery instead of a problem-solving tool. As a parent, look at the Common Core math-teaching materials: number lines, unnecessarily complicated calculations, etc. I could go on with more issues in science, history, and other subjects, but these two examples are enough to illustrate the point that learning and knowledge are always built on a foundation of absolutes.

There are many Christian teachers in public schools that base their teaching on Christian principles, but the “official” line is Humanism. In the 1970s I taught summer sessions on Biblical Creation at the NC Governor’s School, which is a summer program for top rising High School seniors, whose purpose is to “provoke critical thinking in students.” In year 4, I took a poll asking students: “Who believes in some form of Creation?” and about half raised their hands. This opportunity ended abruptly when several humanist teachers in the room saw half the hands go up for Creation. My contact person, a Christian, later told me the ones that ran the program were very upset because I had so many convincing arguments for Creation and against Evolution. It was evident to me that in public schools you could only teach according to humanist presuppositions, so much for the First Amendment in education. Presenting only one side of any axiom, like Evolution destroys critical thinking in students and makes “political correctness” the result. They become advocates for Evolution, without any reason or foundation for their beliefs.

Evolution Wastes Valuable Resources That Could Be Working to Cure Diseases


Since Evolution’s not true spending any millions of dollars on Evolution promotion and research every year is a complete waste including time, money, scientific talent, precious laboratory space, and many others resources. If these resources were used for research that is beneficial to humankind, we would advance faster in things like curing disease and wipe out human suffering in many ways. All these resources spent on promotion of Evolution and research has NO benefit to humankind. To illustrate this terrible waste, I’ll give two examples: The National Science Foundation Website and GoLife Studies.

First, The National Science Foundation, funded by US tax dollars, maintains an interactive website titled: Evolution of Evolution -150 Years of Darwin’s “On the Origin of Species.” This site is very slick and sophisticated. Besides promoting Darwin himself, it covers the scientific areas of Anthropology, Astronomy, Biology, Geosciences, and Polar Sciences. This site is periodically updated with new material. It is especially attractive to computer literate youth and is pure Evolution indoctrination. They mix real operational science with Evolutionary conclusions to show they are related and MUST be accepted together which is pure propaganda and has no basis in real science. This website approach can be very convincing to a young student or a person with little understanding of science. The site is tax-funded indoctrination of a scientific model of the past that only half the US population supports. It is a complete waste!

My second example is a series of government-financed projects that have no redeeming value. They contribute NOTHING to the growth of useful scientific knowledge to improve humankind. The NSF funds these studies under the umbrella of Genealogy of Life Program “GoLife Studies.” They are designed solely to develop the Evolutionary “Tree of Life.” The Evolutionary Tree of Like does NOT exist and research to assemble it has no scientific value. Here is a sample list of some of these projects.

Automated and community-driven synthesis of the tree of life (2 projects)

The Zygomycetes (fungus) Genealogy of Life – The conundrum of Kingdom Fungi

Untangling the Deep Genealogy of Microbial Dark Matter

I didn’t find any projects that relate to anything that could potentially help humans. The work classifies into the “Tree of Life” things like moss, worms, algae, fungus, sharks, sponges, etc. In 2014 this program had 72 open projects at the cost of slightly more than $47 million. In the last paragraph of their project summary, they state their intention to indoctrinate students as part of the research! Here, the government is financing research with no value.

These are just two examples of many resources wasted on promotion or research that could be used for work much more beneficial to humankind. It’s not just the cost and lost assets; there is also a significant amount of intellectual talent wasted too.

Education’s Evolution Failure: After 55 years of a teaching monopoly only about 50% of the US public believes in Evolution.

Evolutionists express great frustration and distress in the persistent results of polling the US population on what they believe: Creation or Evolution. Poll after poll, after poll, after poll all say the same thing. About half the US population believes in Evolution in all its different forms, and the other half believes in Creation in all its manifestations. Although evolutionists have had a monopoly in US public education for more than 50 years and have pounded Evolution into students in schools all that time the numbers, haven’t changed. In some recent polls, this question has even gotten worse for them. In recent Gallup polls, the results were;

Poll 1: “Do you believe in ape to man evolution?” Results:

34% believed in God assisted Evolution,

16% believed in Atheistic Evolution,

43% in Creation and

7% have no opinion.

So 50% believed in Evolution, 43% in Creation and 7% didn’t care, OR to say it another way 77% believed God played some role in our existence and only 16% thought he did not! Evolutionary educators have taught five generations of students, attending public schools, which God did not play a role in their creation, and only 16% believed them!

The results are again, half Evolution and half Creation!

Since the close of World War 2, the US public schools have taught Evolution as the ONLY way to explain how we got here. They emphasize this the only viable option. They have successfully kept out ALL other options (Biblical Creation, Theistic Evolution, Intelligent Design, Etc.) out of the classroom. In 1959, the 100th anniversary of Darwin’s publication of “Origin of the Species,” was celebrated and Evolution education was declared essential for the US to be successful in scientific achievement. Today, after more than 55 years of intensive educational effort to promote Evolution half the US population remains unconvinced it’s true. That divide hasn’t changed in 55 YEARS. Convincing students Evolution is true is not a matter of education, it’s changing one’s view of the most profound questions one can ask: “where we came from?” Education doesn’t easily change a person’s worldview, presuppositions, and faith. It is not merely information or knowledge you are trying to change it’s one’s foundations. Evolution educators, wake up, your attempts to educate the US population out of their faith has been an utter failure. After more than 50 years of a monopoly of public education to indoctrinate students into evolution, why have they been so unsuccessful? The reason is obvious! Evolution is illogical and easily recognized as false. Education can’t overcome stupidity. People just won’t believe it even when it’s the only thing taught. The Bible’s Romans 1:18-32 dramatically demonstrated this by saying men know the truth but suppress it and refuse to believe. Intelligence is not a measure of wisdom. Evolutionists are willfully ignorant of the Truth.

Nations thrive based on the Bible! – The American Revolution

Principles of freedom, liberty, and equality only flourish in a culture that recognizes the God of the Bible. Without God, a culture quickly descends into depravity. Humanism and Atheism as governing principles bring oppression, not freedom. Humanist Manifesto II regards other belief systems with contempt, especially Christianity. Nations degenerate very quickly without God and Biblical principles as their building blocks!

Biblical cultural foundations expressed in the values of the founders of the United States will impact how well a nation functions and how long it survives. To contrast these principles, we’ll compare the founding of two countries, one founded on Biblical principles and the other on Humanist principles. In the late 1700s, two revolutions took place that gave birth to two new, different nations. The American Revolution in 1776 and the French Revolution in 1789 had different foundation principles and very different outcomes.

The American Revolution’s document of expressing its Biblical basis is the preamble to the Declaration of Independence, which recognizes God’s sovereign rule over creation and his role as creator. It clearly affirms the equality of individuals, yet, this equality will not be fully realized by all persons in the US until the early twentieth century. In the 1870s, the Fourteenth Amendment was passed to free slaves, and women’s rights were finally fully recognized in the first part of the twentieth century through women’s Sufferage. This new nation emerges based on; “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” It declares that governments be established by the will of the governed, the people. When written, in 1776, these two principles were very radical and set this new nation apart from anything that had come before. Kings and dictators had always ruled. Now they said “a government of the people, by the people” and ruling by “the consent of the governed.” This principle will change the world! For two hundred years, these principles reigned even though it saw some slow erosion. George Washington warned, “If the freedom of speech is taken away, then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter.” Ben Franklin said, “People willing to trade their freedom for temporary security deserve neither, and will lose both.” Finally, Thomas Jefferson said, “Experience has shown, that even under the best forms of government those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny.” As we entered the latter part of the twentieth century, the concept of “political correctness” began more and more to inhibit freedom of discussion of topics not consistent with popular cultural opinions. The American culture based on God had thrived for more than two hundred years, but now, in the early part of the twenty-first century, it is fading as God’s abandoned in both public education and the public forum. Wow! That looks like Israel just before the tribes were carried into exile.

Next week I’ll contrast these results with the French Revolution founded on Humanism. The basic principles appear similar: liberty, equality, and fraternity but the major, significant difference are the lack of any reference to God. The French Revolution articles are a purely Humanist document!
