For more than 35 years I have answered many questions commonly asked of Christians on my website, http://www.sixdaycreation.com. More than 100 answers are in my book: ANSWERS For “The Hope That Is in You. However, the issue addressed in this blog has not been tackled until now.
QUESTION: If God created food derived only from vegetation to be eaten before the flood, then why did God create sugar since it is so harmful to human health including diabetes, tooth decay, and heart disease?
On day six of the, Creation account God defines humankind’s food in Genesis 1:29-30. And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.”
God instructs men and animals to eat food derived from vegetation, including what we classify as fruits, vegetables, legumes, and nuts. Most of these foods contain some amount of sugar. So, sugar was designed to be part of man’s diet, in small quantities as a portion of whole grain, fruit, etc. Sugar is necessary for a living organism’s normal metabolism at a level of 5-10% of total consumption. Therefore it is designed to be a MINOR ingredient in foods, NOT a primary one.
High levels of sugar in the diet is the primary cause of dental caries, tooth cavities, and diabetes and also contribute to heart disease. There are two main reasons why sugar has become disease-causing in modern man’s diet. First, it is extracted, refined, and concentrated to an almost pure level. Candy is NOT a good nutritional choice since it’s primary ingredient is refined sugar. Second, we consume sugar many times than the more the level in natural foods.
In summary, sugar is designed by God to be a minor ingredient in natural foods, but modern man consumes it at much higher levels than needed by our bodies resulting in the many health problems. It’s the abuse of sugar, not its use that’s the problem. This damage results from the impact of our sinful rebellion against God. We love to eat what tastes good, and we love sweet tastes, so we eat sugar in large quantities
Humankind’s fall into sin described in Genesis 3 ultimately causes our sugar problem. Sin incurs the debt of disease, decay, and finally our death. No human escapes death because every person’s sin debt MUST be paid to satisfy God’s justice. But God, as Jesus, came to Earth as a substitute to pay men’s sin penalty. Has your sin debt been paid or will you pay it yourself?
