Mt. St Helens & Grand Tetons Evidence for a Young Earth

I did 2 hours of radio on “Iron Sharpens Iron” http://www.ironsharpensironradio.com this week with Chris Arnzen, Buz Taylor and Dr. Tas Walker from CMI (Creation Ministries International – Creation.com). Our subject was Geology and a Young Earth. Although I mentioned these geological formations recently, based on the listener questions on ISI I wanted to cover them again. This week’s blog highlights two of the hundreds of examples in geology that point to a Young Earth.

Mt. St. Helen’s eruption is evidence for a Young Earth

When Mt. Saint Helens erupted in 1980 it produced two significant effects: 1) evidence for the rapid formation of geological features and 2) rapid erosion to form canyons.

1) Rapid Formation. Hundreds of feet of sediment were laid down in days that have the appearance of long ages of geologic time because of thousands of thin layers. In many geological texts, you’ll find each layer is counted as a yearly cycle, but here they were formed in days.

2) Rapid Erosion. A canyon formed in less than two days that is 1/40 the size of Grand Canyon and appears old. Other canyons formed in days include a river that did not cause it but is an artifact of its formation.

Fossil forests are forming in Spirit Lake that has a striking similarity in appearance to Specimen Ridge in Yellowstone Park. These events are powerful evidence that catastrophic events can occur in short periods of time rather than the traditional long geologic ages taught in colleges and universities.

The Grand Tetons are very young mountains.

If you go to Grand Teton National Park, the rangers will tell you that those mountains rose to their present position over a period of 20 million years. Over this 20 million years there is supposed to be about 20,000 feet of mountains eroded (1,000 feet per million years). When you hike in the Teton’s passes, you see many broken rocks but little sand or fine material that would indicate extended periods of erosion. The plain at the foot of these peaks contains many beautiful lakes that show a lot of exposed rock and shallow soil layers. There is no sign of the vast amount of material that should be there after 20 million years of erosion. These mountains appear to be young, not old.

Other examples are the Colorado River, Bryce Canyon, Cedar Breaks & Grand Canyon. https://answersingenesis.org/geology/grand-canyon-facts/when-and-how-did-the-grand-canyon-form/

Next time you go to a national park look around and ask the rangers questions based on the young earth model. For example: “Was the Grand Canyon caused by a lot of water and a little time instead of a lot of time and a little water?” http://charlieliebert.blog

Next week I’ll start a series that deconstructs the Materialists argument that states: “All I can believe is what I can sense.”

Radioactive dating does NOT prove Evolution.

One of the most common claims proponents of Evolution make is that radiometric dating shows an Earth that is billions of years old. Science can’t prove past events! If they could, we would not need juries in criminal trials. The evidence alone would be sufficient. It NEVER is. Fallible human beings with particular worldviews must interpret the evidence presented to the jury. For example, an Atheist could never accept Creation because it implies God and that conflicts with all he believes. Radioactive dating methods make unprovable assumptions about the past. Also, C14 dating can only go back 50,000 years, so it is no help for billions of years old Earth.

What are the assumptions of Radioactive Dating?

Radioactive dating, in general, depends on three major assumptions:

  1. 1) When the rock forms (hardens) there should only be radioactive parent atoms in the rock and no daughter radiogenic element (derived by radioactive decay) atoms.
  2. 2) After hardening, the rock must remain a closed system, that is, no parent or daughter atoms can be added or removed from the rock by external influences such as percolating ground water; and
  3. 3) the radioactive decay rate must remain constant for the period measured.

These assumptions have been proven inconsistent and sometimes untrue in many cases. The RATE study published by ICR is an excellent resource to enumerate these inconsistencies. If any of the three assumptions is false, then the method fails, and ‘dates’ will be wrong. For example; leaching in the rocks, varying isotope ratios, etc. show the methods at best are unreliable. Dr. Steve Austin at ICR tested rocks from the bottom and top of Grand Canyon. Three of the four methods revealed that the bottom rocks were younger than the upper rocks an IMPOSSIBLE conclusion. Radiological tests date rocks that were liquid and have turned solid. BTW these rocks never contain fossils. The fossil-bearing rock is sedimentary (laid down underwater in Noah’s flood). Evolutionists consistently disregard radiometric dates that conflict with their time scheme. If a particular dating measurement doesn’t support Evolution, it’s thrown away.

Doesn’t Carbon Dating Prove the Earth is old?

Carbon Dating is a radiological dating method often cited to “prove” Evolution. It does not because:

1) As a method, it can only extend to 50,000 years not millions of years,

2) C14 can only date tissue, not fossils (stone impressions of bones). When you find, and we have, real dinosaur bones containing viable tissue, it is a testimony to Creation because biological tissue won’t last millions of years.

3) Carbon 14 is not in balance in the atmosphere indicating a young one, not an old one.

Geology demonstrates the Young Earth: Grand Canyon, Grand Tetons & Mt.St.Helens

How long ago were the Grand Tetons in Wyoming formed??

If you go to Grand Teton National Park, the rangers will tell you that those mountains rose to their present position over a period of 20 million years. Over this 20 million years there is supposed to be about 20,000 feet of mountains eroded (1,000 feet per million years). When you hike in the Teton’s passes, you see many broken rocks but little sand or fine material that would indicate extended periods of erosion. The plain at the foot of these peaks contain many beautiful lakes that show a lot of exposed rock and shallow soil layers. There is no sign of the vast amount of material that should be there after 20 million years of erosion. These mountains appear to be young, not old.

How was the Grand Canyon formed, the “missing rivers”??

When I visited the North Rim of Grand Canyon, I heard the Park Rangers tell a tall tale about how the canyon was formed. The problem that they face is; the rim of the canyon is over 1000 feet above the level of the Colorado River upstream in southern Utah. The river would have to run UPHILL to cut the canyon. To overcome this, they fabricated a series of rivers that no longer exist and disappeared without a trace. The ranger admitted that this explanation is hard to justify but is the best evolutionary geologists can do. The Creationist explanation is that a massive amount of water was trapped during Noah’s flood and was released in southern Utah. That flow cut the Grand Canyon in a very short amount of time, days or weeks. At the eruption of MT. St. Helens in 1980 we saw this same effect where a canyon 1/40th the size of Grand Canyon was eroded in less than 48 hours. The creation model is far more feasible than the missing rivers scenario.

How did the eruption of Mt. St. Helens show the viability of Creation?

The two results of the eruption of Mt. St. Helens that showed rapid process could look as if they took long periods of time were:

1) Deposition of hundreds of feet of strata in days that had very fine layers in them that most evolutionists would count as one year each for each layer, and

2) Rapid erosion of canyons that have an appearance of age but formed in days.

Next time you go to a national park look around and ask the rangers questions based on the young earth model. For example: “Was the Grand Canyon caused by a lot of water and a little time instead of a lot of time and a little water?” There are credible Creationist explanations for the geological features on the Earth that in many cases make more sense than the Evolutionary ones.

Different people, in good faith, can look at the same fact and interpret it differently. But that’s where an interesting conversation begins. Eric Schlosser

Blog 2016 032. 08/07/2016 Geology demos Young Earth Creation & fails Evolution.

Evolutionists love to use geology as a science that proves an old Earth. For example, I was told that the many layers in Grand Canyon must take millions of years to form since each layer is a one-year cycle. That’s an unfounded assumption based on premises that were demonstrated potentially false at the eruption of Mount St Helens. In this Blog, I’ll give three anecdotal illustrations to show Geology is credibly interpreted in a Young Earth context.

How long ago were the Grand Tetons formed??

If you go to the Grand Teton National Park, the rangers tell you that those mountains rose to their present position over a period of 20 million years. Over this 20 million years there is supposed to be about 20,000 feet of mountains eroded (1,000 feet per million years). Was the Grand Canyon formed by, “missing rivers”??

During June 1998, I had the opportunity to visit the North Rim of Grand Canyon. There I heard the Park Ranger tell a tall tale about how the canyon was formed by “missing rivers”. The problem is; the rim of the canyon is over 2000 feet above the level of the Colorado River upstream in southern Utah. The river would have to run UPHILL to cut the canyon. To overcome this, they fabricated a series of rivers that no longer exist and disappeared without a trace. The ranger admitted that this explanation is hard to justify but is the best the evolutionary geologists can do. The Creationist explanation is that a massive amount of water trapped during Noah’s flood was released in southern Utah and cut the canyon in a very short amount of time. This creation model is far more feasible than the missing rivers scenario. If you carefully look at the canyon, you’ll see other features that indicate catastrophic formation including: the direction of erosion, which is perpendicular to the river flow, and the lack of a significant delta for the Colorado River. If all the material eroded out of the canyon is not downstream, where did it go?

Does the eruption of Mt St Helens in 1980 show the viability of Young Earth Creation?

Two results of the eruption of Mt. St. Helens in 1980 showed rapid processes could look like they took millions of years that took only days:

1) Hundreds of feet of strata that had very thin layers were deposited in days. Most evolutionists would count these as one year each.

2) Rapid formation of canyons by erosion that has the appearance of long ages that were formed in days.
