Salvation Illustrated by Lazarus’ Raising!

Jesus raising of Lazarus from the dead in John 11:17-44 illustrates how God accomplishessalvation. Humankind is dead in their sin and unable to save themselves from God’s righteous judgment and condemnation. God saves men by first making them alive to hear by the work of the Holy Spirit. Then they respond to the gospel communicated to them by another person.

Lazarus is dead four days. His body has begun to decay. It stinks!  His body physically can’t come back to life by any natural process. All people are dead in their sin and unable to hear! Dead men cannot hear or be awakened.  They are DEAD!!

Jesus comes to the grave and calls Lazarus by name. But his body can’t live! How can he respond? His body is rotting and stinking. He’s been dead four days! So, the power of God comes on his body and restores it to a condition of life.  He can now hear Christ’s call. All the death and decay is removed by God’s power. His bodyis in a state of life with awareness. The Holy Spirit has brought life, consciousness and open ears.  Jesus spoke about open ears to hear three times in the parable of the sower. “He who has ears to hear, let him hear …”  God made Lazarus’ body alive.  He is aware of his surroundings, and his ears are open to hearing the call of Jesus.

Thus the first action in salvation is God preparing a person, who is dead and making them alive so they can hear the gospel. God alone can do this. Dead men, in their sin, cannot respond to a gospel call without God acting first.  That is why we must always pray for God to move before we witness to Christ’s transforming power. Dead men cannot, will not and do not hear us!  God works first!

Lazarus is now alive and aware, lying on the cold gravestone, and hears Christ’s call.  He knows he is lying in the grave, so the first thing he does in response is get up and walk out. It’s man’s responsibility to respond to the gospel, but God uses human agencyto complete this process.  Men bring the gospel to other men!

Now he walks outof the grave still encumbered by grave wrappings, which represent his sin and past life. Although his sin debt, the penalty of death has been fully paidby Jesus, his lifestyle, habits, etc. are all still with him. Others must help him shed those things.  Unwrapping him is a picture of discipleship.  One of the best ways to disciple new believers is the “Operation Timothy” program available from members of CBMC (Christian Business Men’s Connection). Interested? charlie@sixdaycreation.com.

If you are a Christian then at a moment in time, after you were physically born, you were born again when God made you spiritually alive and gave you ears to hear.  Then, you listened to the Gospel call and responded sealing your salvation in Christ.

Newspaper Article “Liberated Lieberts” Jesus Rescues US!

My blog this week is a newspaper article I recently discovered published 18 years ago. It’s longer than my usual blog but worth reading.  I’m posting it because it dramatically explains Terry and my salvation and our call to Christ.  Note: This article originally appeared in the September 15, 2000 edition of the Charlotte World (North Carolina, USA) newspaper written by Paul Chesser.  https://answersingenesis.org/ministry-news/ministry/liberated-lieberts/

Greensboro NC—Charlie Liebert’s idea of a good time back in New Jersey was to drink beer with a bunch of buddies and mock Billy Graham on television.

A self-described “atheistic evolutionist,” Liebert would ridicule the fact that he and his friends were “sinners.” Despite the foolishness of the times and circumstances though, he says it still had an effect on him.  “The point was, I heard the Gospel go in,” he said.

The former chemist from Greensboro has repented to the point where he teaches creation science workshops, contracting regularly with the ministry Answers in Genesis. He even looks scientific, with receding hairline, a full, neatly trimmed beard and rounded glasses. The name “Liebert” gives the impression that the stereotypical German laboratory accent might tumble from his lips, but his dialect is distinctly Long Island.

Liebert grew up in New York as the son of German immigrants. His father, who was half-Jewish, emigrated from his mother country at the age of 13 in 1928. Liebert’s grandfather was a German officer in World War I.

Attending public school on Long Island, Liebert said science teaching indoctrinated him into evolutionist beliefs. He followed his parents to Methodist church but dropped out at age 16 when the pulpit preaching on the evils of alcohol contradicted what he knew about the lifestyles of much of the congregation.

Most of Liebert’s chemistry career covered his 27 years with Ciba-Geigy, whom he started working for in 1967. Six years later the company relocated him to Greensboro, and by then he and his wife, Terry, had two small children under age three. Not long after arriving in North Carolina, Terry decided to become involved in church again after a long absence, mostly for the children’s sake. Terry’s upbringing had been solidly Catholic, but she started attending an Episcopal church, which she enjoyed for its social aspects.

“It was a good middle ground for an ex-Catholic and Methodist,” she said.

Charlie would have none of it, so Terry would leave the children home with him on Sunday mornings. A few months of child-care responsibilities, however, inspired Charlie to start going to church with Terry.

At the same time, they experienced severe marital strains. Charlie succumbed to temptations with alcohol, and in 1977 they started talking about divorce. By then, his worldview had progressed from atheist to agnostic—mild progress.

Nearing his low point, Charlie attended a retreat in Asheville in March 1977. It was there where a workshop speaker, and the Holy Spirit, confronted him with three questions that he couldn’t answer:

What’s your purpose in life?          What does life mean?         Where are you going?

“I could see myself going down the tubes,” said Charlie. “So, I said, ‘God, if you’re there, come in; I need some help.’”

At that point, he said he was completely confused intellectually. Everything he had ever learned about science and evolution was a contradiction to what his new spiritual life represented. “I had to renew my mind,” he said.

Charlie returned home on fire for God and immediately began engrossing himself in the Bible and other books to straighten out his scientific puzzlement. Meanwhile, Terry felt left in the dust. She was never interested in science and resented all his reading.

“It was an immediate change in him,” said Terry. “But he didn’t know how to share the gospel with me. I was in such darkness.”

It began almost two months of spiritual depression for Terry, with most of her time alone spent “constantly crying.” Her best friend moved away in April, and with her marriage in tatters, she felt desperately alone. Her Catholic background and recent Episcopalianism collided in her mind, with neither making sense. She said: “The Lord was working in me.”

“Being a Catholic, you’re always in hell. I only saw flames in my mind,” she said. “And the Episcopal Church wasn’t looking for you to be born again, but for spiritual renewal.”

Two months after Charlie’s conversion, Terry traveled to a women’s retreat. It also turned out to be a catalytic event for her turning to Christ. Instead of merely understanding that Christ died for the sins of the whole world, Terry realized that He was her personal savior.

Christ filled the void of the friend who moved away and began healing their near-broken marriage.

“Being in Christ truly made us one spiritually,” remembered Terry. “Because we were so excited about the Lord, it was instant.”

Charlie continued to toil for Ciba-Geigy and read, read, read. Three years passed before he could be peaceful with the creationist explanation for the origin of life. He calls himself a “pragmatic scientist,” and believes he is uniquely qualified to teach creation because “I understand the other side of the issue,” he said.

He began teaching science in 1982 at the request of a homeschooling mother and ended up developing creation workshops, which he taught as side work. His workshops even passed muster with Ken Ham, Answers in Genesis’s executive director, who began contracting Liebert to lead workshops and seminars on their behalf in 1994. That year, Ciba-Geigy cut back on their workforce, and Liebert took early retirement so he could teach creation as his primary occupation.

REVISED: The Charlie and Terry now, in 2018 are members of Redeemer OPC in Carlisle Pennsylvania. His ministry has excelled as well, with Charlie teaching his materials around the country. He has spoken throughout the Carolinas and around the Southeast.  For ten years, 1995-2005, Charlie produced his television show, “Creation Foundation Explanation,” on local cable access in Greensboro.

“The thing that is most frustrating as a creation scientist is the outright lying the evolutionists do to convince the public,” said Charlie. “It’s bad science, and it’s lies.”

My Testimony; why clear and logical thinking Atheists should become Agnostic.

During March I’ve given my testimony at three CBMC (Christian Business Men’s Connection) outreach events in Carlisle, York, and Chambersburg and I’ll be doing it again in Gettysburg next Wednesday at Dunlap’s Restaurant. I became a Christian at 35, converted from “hardcore” Atheism.  As I’ve spoken each time, during the Q&A, a common reaction has been: “Explain WHY you said Atheism is an illogical and impossible philosophy.  My Answer: No one can say:  “There is no God.” because a person must be omniscience to make that statement and NO man is!

To the Atheist: “Be honest with yourself.  Your belief that “there is NO God” is a FAITH statement based on your BELIEFS, not on any proof!” The absence of evidence is NOT proof.  Besides, proving that negative is impossible.  For example, I say: “There are no unicorns alive on Earth today.”  Can I prove that? NO!  I’d have to be able to see every square foot of the planet at the same time to be sure, and even then I might miss it because of the animals camouflage.  I’d need Planetary Omniscience to know for sure there are no Unicorns.

Since no man has perfect, absolute knowledge, the best an Atheist can say is “I don’t and can’t know if there is a God.”  He can’t say for certain “there is no God” because he’s not omniscient!  When the Atheist realizes this untenable, logical dilemma, he should flee to Agnosticism. Both Atheism and Agnosticism deny God—the Atheist with absurd certainty and the Agnostic with skeptical, uncertainty.  The Agnostic’s view is a confession of ignorance NOT knowledge or truth.  In the Bible, Romans addresses this as “suppressing the truth.”  Agnostics do not deny the existence of God but hold that one cannot know for sure whether or not God exists.

Ask the Agnostic: “Is there a God?” They typically reply, “I don’t know if there is a God or not, but if there is, he is not relevant to my life.” Most would probably add, “no one can know for sure if there is or is not a God, but it doesn’t matter.”

Nineteenth-century British scientist Thomas H. Huxley created the term “Agnostic” for himself in 1870.  He believed that only material phenomena were objects of exact knowledge. He made up the word from the prefix a, meaning “without, not,” as in amoral, and the noun Gnostic. Gnostic is related to the Greek word gnōsis, “knowledge,” which was used by early Christian writers to mean “higher, esoteric knowledge of spiritual things.”  In coining the term Agnostic, Huxley was considering a group of his fellow intellectuals—“ists,” as he called them—who eagerly embraced various doctrines or theories like Evolution that explained the Universe without God.

Astronomer Carl Sagan, a self-identified Agnostic, said, “The Cosmos is all that is or was or ever will be. Our feeblest contemplations of the Cosmos stir us. There is a tingling in the spine, a catch in the voice, a faint sensation, as if a distant memory, of falling from a height. We know we are approaching the greatest of mysteries.”

Charlie Liebert’s journey from Atheistic Evolutionist to Christian Young Earth Creationist.

I grew up in the small town, Amityville on Long Island, NY, with my two sisters, Rosemarie and Joyce. My parents took us to church almost every Sunday. In Sunday school we learned many Bible stories, but I never remember being confronted with the Gospel. At 16 years old I became aware of the hypocrisy of church members. In church one Sunday morning the pastor was droning on about the evil of drinking. I knew that most of the adults sitting around me had been at the Amityville Yacht Club season-opening the night before and had consumed a lot of beer, wine, and liquor. How foolish I thought. “These people don’t believe a word of what’s being said! Hypocrites!” I shut off anything the church had to say and began my descent from Marginal Christianity into Atheism.  In high school and college, he was taught he evolved from pond scum, through apes and he wholeheartedly believed it.  By the time I was 24 and approaching completion of my BS in Chemistry I had become an active, hardcore Atheist.

When I became a Christian in 1977, I faced a severe intellectual dilemma. I had been taught evolution as a fact, yet when I read Genesis I saw, God created the world in six days a relatively short time ago. For three years I studied books by many “recent creationists” and became convinced that recent creation made a lot more sense than old age evolution. I said; “When you look at the science objectively recent Creation is much more viable than Evolution. I evolved from an Old Earth Atheistic Evolutionist to a Young Earth Creationist in about three years.  The most influential books I read were: The Lie by Ken Ham, Scientific Creationism by Dr. Henry Morris, and The Genesis Flood by Morris and Whitcomb. As I studied I came to the conclusions that form the basis of my third book  “Without 3 Miracles Darwin’s Dead!  Science Proves Atheistic Evolution is IMPOSSIBLE.”

  • Evolution is NOT science; it’s a faith statement about the past!
  • Evolution breaks three unbreakable scientific laws, and that’s impossible! Scientific laws CAN”T ever be broken, and still remain laws. If Evolution breaks scientific laws it must fall back to a theory or even just a hypothesis.
  • Evolution’s never been observed in a laboratory or the field. Dr. Richard Dawkins said. “Evolution has been observed. It’s just that it hasn’t been observed when it’s happening.”
  • The missing links between apes and men are ALL still missing,
  • There are some creatures whose behavior, design or amazing complexity Evolution cannot explain. The history of Evolution contains many fraud and I’ll expose two..

There are three irrefutable arguments that show Evolution’s impossible because it violates three scientific laws, the 1st and 2nd Laws of Thermodynamics and the Law of Biogenesis.  I call these three arguments: Magic, Frankenstein, and Uphill Molasses.  Magic is the appearance of something from nothing, so the 1st law is violated.  Frankenstein is life coming from non-living chemicals, so Biogenesis is violated, Uphill molasses is going uphill in a downhill Universe which physics calls Entropy. So the 2nd law is violated.  See the book at http://w3mdarwinsdead.com

God’s Wake-Up Calls, My Third, Saturday 1/27/2108, Charlie Liebert

I as born into this world on 09/02/1941.  God gave me life in him on March 20, 1977, at thirty-five, in Greensboro, North Carolina, when I became a Christian. My transformation from Atheism was so sudden, surprising, and dramatic that I had to unlearn and relearn almost everything I believed. God in His sovereign purpose gave me ears to hear, brought me from death to life, and I was “born again.” All my presuppositions changed in a moment. Everything I thought I knew about humankind and God was wrong! As a new believer, I confronted the biblical truth of the Genesis’ account of Creation in direct opposition to the Evolution I loved. There was no evolution in the first three chapters of Genesis.  I’ll talk more about this more in next week’s blog.  In 1977 was the beginning of my walk with Jesus.

Toward the end of 1996, I came to the brink of eternity with a significant heart attack.  The surgeon would later tell me that when he entered the OR I had 30 minutes to live.  I saw my mortality up close.  This second call brought major changes in life priorities because my life is just a vapor I should spend as much time as possible on eternal things.

Almost 40 years after becoming a Christian, God again called me to consider His great mercy. In Christ.  Now living in Carlisle, PA., on March 3, 2107, I had a minor heart attack.  Triple bypass surgery was performed on March 20, 2017, forty years to the day from my conversion.  God gave me a new heart in 1977 and renewed my heart again in 2017.  Both heart attacks were God’s calls to draw me to greater commitment to Christ.

This most recent call was on Saturday 1/27/2018.  Returning home for lunch from a meeting at the library I suddenly doubled over in severe pain like nothing I’d ever experienced. I have been studying with some Christian brothers the connection between Romans 8:28 and I Thessalonians 5:18. “ALL things work together for good” and “Give thanks in ALL things.” A sudden reality confronted me: “Could I give thanks, NOW.  The pain was overwhelming.  My highly inflamed appendix burst.  A normal 1-hour surgery took 2 ½ hours because of all the clean-up required.  I came home 24 hours later, and healing continues.  BUT the most important lesson I learned was to see up close and personal my mortality and the connection of ALL things in His purpose.  In Christ, we need to be thankful even in the darkness and pain.  All things DO work together for good and I WILL thank Him in ALL things

So, when you get discouraged, in pain or depressed, PRAISE GOD.  Give thanks in ALL things and ALL circumstances.  God is working for your GOOD in those hard, dark, painful times.  Find help in the Hymn lines:

My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!
My sin, not in part but the whole,
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

Charlie’s Born Again in 1977

This week’s blog shares my short testimony of coming to Jesus in 1977.  More extended versions are in my book “Always Be Ready to Give an Answer!  A Former Atheist’s Personal Christian Evangelism Plan.”

I grew up in the small town of Amityville on Long Island. My parents took my two sisters and me to a large, mainline, liberal church almost every Sunday. At sixteen years old, I became acutely aware of the hypocrisy of the church members. So, I mentally shut off anything the church had to say.  By the time I was twenty-four and approaching completion of my BS in chemistry, I had become a staunch Atheist.  Living in New Jersey and met my future wife, Terry, through one of my roommates, her cousin. We married, had our first child, and moved to Rockland County, NY.  Although marriage had brought some changes, I was falling more and more into sinful practices. We had our second child, and my company moved us to Greensboro, NC. By this time, I was viewing pornography and well on the way to becoming an alcoholic. Terry and I talked seriously about divorce. My life was coming apart, and there seemed to be nothing I could do about it.  We had lost all Sunday family gatherings when we moved to NC so, Sunday became a barren time. In Greensboro, most of our neighbors and fellow workers went to church, so we began to attend an Episcopal church. It was the right place for Terry, the ex-Catholic, and Charlie, the ex-Methodist. Nothing came from the pulpit that challenged either one of us, but there were three families in that church whose lives were very different. I couldn’t explain how, but I knew they were different. We did a Bible study with them called “Edge of Adventure,” and our marriage relationship improved for a short time. The study was over, and we went back to the way it was: bad! Later that year one of the men from that group suggested I attend a men’s weekend retreat in Asheville. Terry encouraged me to go. After all, it was a chance to get away from all my problems.

At the beginning of the weekend, on Thursday, we gave up our watches so we would not be concerned about time. On Friday morning, after breakfast, the first speaker asked three questions. “What is your purpose in life? Where are you going? What does it all mean?” As I sat there, I realized I had no real answers. Yes, I had a wife, two children, a house, and two cars, but I knew that was not the answer. These questions bothered me all weekend. After many talks I hardly remember, I went into the chapel alone on Saturday night because I was so troubled by these issues. I knelt and began to think and remember.

I remembered sitting in the apartment in New Jersey, before I met Terry, with my other roommates, drinking beer and watching Billy Graham on TV. We made great fun of his telling; we were lost sinners and needed Jesus. I remembered a high school friend, Frank, that had witnessed to me when I was working on my MBA.  But now those things suddenly seemed real. I said in my mind, God, if you’re real (and I wasn’t sure if he was), you can have my life because it is an awful mess. (God, true to his word, took it.)

In the next moments, there was someone in the room with me that I could not see, but I felt his presence. Something strange had happened, and I did not know yet what it was.  When I came back home to Greensboro, I came down into the den where Terry was watching TV. Her first reaction was “What happened to you. Did you see God?” There was a change in my countenance that I couldn’t explain. I wasn’t sure, but I too knew something had happened. Going back to my daily routine, I immediately developed an adamant desire to read the Bible. I asked the friend who had invited me to the retreat where I should start. He said the Gospel of John. When I got to John, Chapter 3, where Nicodemus encounters Jesus, I read about being born again. That’s what happened to me! I called my friend, and he confirmed it. Yes, I was born again.

Atheism is Illogical Faith in NOTHING. Christianity is Faith in Jesus Christ.

Newsflash:  My efforts to raise $6,000 for marketing “Without 3 Miracles Darwin’s Dead!” ends today.  See the results at https://igg.me/at/W3MDD

The question of moral absolutes is a source of contrast between Atheism and Christianity. On morality, Atheists say: “Atheism does not lead inevitably to any particular moral position…”  They insist on a relative view of morals.  For example, “What’s right in one circumstance is wrong in another.” OR “Abortion is desirable in some circumstances,” OR “The taking of a human life can be justified if it serves a useful purpose.”  Relativistic morality is a hallmark of Atheism. That Atheist then declares unequivocally, ” There is no God.” That is an absolute statement. It implies personal omniscience or infinite knowledge.  So now we come to the Atheist’s problem: morals are relative, but declaration “there is no God” is absolute. This relativism and absolute conflict are a contradiction of the highest order. You can’t have it both ways! As Mr. Spock would say, “That’s illogical!” Or Data, the android in Star Trek, would say, “That doesn’t compute!” Atheism is a unresolvable contradiction and defies logic.

Here’s a conversation with an atheist.

Charlie: “Are there moral absolutes in the universe like the Ten Commandments?”

Atheist: “Of course not. All moral judgments are dependent on society’s conditions.”

Charlie: “Is there a God?”

Atheist: “No! I say that with certainty, absolutely not!”

Charlie: “So when it comes to morality, there are no absolutes, but you make the absolute statement ‘There is no God.’ You can’t have it both ways: absolute and relative. Atheism is a contradiction in the highest order. If you are going to be consistent with your logic, the best an Atheist can be is Agnostic!  Atheism itself is a logical contradiction!”

Wow. That usually gets a strong reaction, occasionally with anger. The logical flaw in the Atheist worldview has been found out, and they don’t like it. Because they know there is no way to explain or justify it, their only recourse is to create a smokescreen.

Here are some questions I ask atheists to provoke them to think about their worldview.

  • If there is no God, then why does it matter to you if anyone believes in Jesus?
  • Why does my belief in Jesus distress you so much?
  • Don’t I have the freedom to believe what I want to?
  • Why does it make you so angry I believe in God?
  • If he doesn’t exist, why does it matter?
  • If there is no God what’s your point?

One more challenge: “In the history of the Christian church, many rulers, philosophers, kings, etc. have tried to destroy Christianity. They have even, at times, declared it dead. Why, after many centuries, haven’t they succeeded?”  In history, the more persecution of Christian believers, the more rapidly the church has grown. Why is this? The logical explanation is Christianity is true. The more some try to destroy it; the more God preserves it. If Christianity is not true, then there is no point in trying to eradicate it. Leave it alone; it should just go out of fashion and disappear.

Charlie is author of “Always Be Ready to Give an Answer!  A Former Atheist’s Personal Christian Evangelism Plan.” which develops a personal evangelism strategy that gets to the Gospel every time you witness.  His second book ANSWERS For “The Hope That Is in You.  Direct, Simple Answers to the World’s “Hard” Questions” answers more than 100 questions skeptics use to try to stump Christians. Both at http://yourchristiananswers.com  Charlie’s third book, “Without 3 Miracles Darwin’s Dead!  Science Proves Atheistic Evolution is IMPOSSIBLE” challenges Evolution’s believability, because it flagrantly violates three scientific laws, the 1st and 2nd Laws of Thermodynamics and Biogenesis.   To break a scientific law, you need a miracle, and Atheistic Evolution cannot allow any.  Available at http://www.w3mdarwinsdead.com
