Creatures with the “Breath of Life” are affected by death, the penalty for Adam’s SIN! Nephesh!

In addition to the classification system for living organisms, the Bible also separates what scientists call “higher” animals from all others.  The word used in Scripture is “nephesh” and is most often translated as “soul.”  It is also defined as the “breath of life.” God told Noah which creatures to take on the Arkand based on these instructions we conclude, animals that breathe will be saved in the ark, and those that are left outside will drown in the flood.  Since Insects do not breathe but absorb oxygen through other means, they do not have the breath of life(lungs). Insects can stay underwater for long periods of time, and a majority spend part of their life cycle in water. Insects did not go on the Ark but survive in the flood waters.

Now we define animal death as opposed to plant death. Plants don’t die in the same way the soul animals do.  For example; when you eat fruit like an orange you do not destroy its life in the seed because even if the seed passes through an organism’s body, it still has life. Plant it and watch it grow.  That is not true when you eat the chicken sandwich. The chicken has given up its life.

When the Bible talks about death as the penalty for sin, it refers to the death ofhumans and the creatures that have soul life, not insects or plants.  As people, we recognize this and grieve when a loved one dies.   We know in our hearts this is not the way life is supposed to be and that knowledge is part of our being made in God’s image. Watch an animal special on TV and see the lion take down a zebra, kill it and begin to eat it. Other zebras don’t grieve the death of one of the herb because they don’t have an awareness ofdeath as sin’s penalty and they are not made in God’s image.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nephesh (נֶ֫פֶשׁnép̄eš) is a Biblical Hebrew word which refers to the aspects of sentience, and human beings and other animals are both described as having nephesh. Plants, as an example of live organisms, are not referred to in the Bible as having nephesh. The term נפשis literally “soul,” although it is commonly rendered as “life” in English translations…  In Genesis 2:7 the text is that Adam was not given a nephesh but “became a living nephesh…” Nephesh, when put with another word, can detail aspects related to the concept of nephesh; with רוּחַrûach (“spirit”) it describes a part of men that is immaterial, like mind, emotions, will, intellect, personality, and conscience, Job 7:11.

Biblical use:  The word nephesh occurs 754 times in the Hebrew Bible. The first four times it is used exclusively to describe animals: Gen 1:20 (sea life), Gen 1:21 (great sea life), Gen 1:24 (land creatures), Gen 1:30 (birds and land creatures).

Charlie Liebert’s first novel “Yellowstone’s Child” is on Kindle and in Print.

If Yellowstone’s Child, a fictional novel, were a movie, it would be rated “PG.” At about 150, pages it is a GREAT read for teens.  Readers complain that once started they weren’t able to put it down.  There are two underlying messages in Yellowstone’s Child.  First, all my characters are human. None of them is perfect. So, the reader will recognize humankind’s sinful imperfection. It is certain every one of us is NOT infallible. Second, as the plot unfolds, it shows life’s uncertainty and unpredictability. Since, as a Christian, I won’t use sex or violence to attract readers I opt for drama, plot reversals and “the story” within the story to keep the reader’s interest.  One of my first readers complained: “Yellowstone’s Child made me cry five times, twice for sadness, three times for joy.”   It’s that kind of a story!

Yellowstone’s Child’s central theme is personal identity, how one answers the question, “Who am I?”  The story begins when a married couple, Sam and Gloria Graham, chicken farmers from Mississippi, lose their ten-year-old daughter, Sally, to brain cancer.  After her death, they plan to sell their Mississippi farm and to move to Nebraska.  Before selling, to help recover from their daughter’s death; they take a short vacation in February to Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming.  At the same time, at Yellowstone, three cousins from the Johanson family reunion fall into a river partially fed by hot springs.  Two get right out but the third, Sarah, hits her head and floats away on her back downstream.

The Grahams rescue her and discover she has complete amnesia so, they kidnap her and take back to Mississippi to replace their dead daughter, Sally.  Yellowstone Park Rangers and Sarah’s family search the Boiling, and Yellowstone Rivers but do not recover a body.  Sarah is eventually declared dead.  In Mississippi, the Grahams inherit significant wealth, move to Nebraska, change their identities through a political bribe and move again to Ventura CA as Sam, Gloria, and Sally Johnson.  Sarah, still with complete amnesia, enters an all-girls private school that specializes in preparing girls for careers in movies and TV.  She starts in 6th grade at Ventura Private School for Girls and graduates seven years later.  During each school year, 6th through 12th, another secret about her identity develops that has to be kept by her parents.  After graduating from VPSG, she earns a BA in Music, Theater, and Dance from Cal State.  She obtains a starring role in the new TV series DETECTIVES LIVE as Detective Elaine Scott.  About to finish her Masters, she has an auto accident on her way home, bumps her head and suddenly vivid memories of her life before she was ten return.  She confronts her “parents,” and they admit to kidnapping her so, she begins to search for her real identity.  She asks, “Who am I? Sarah, Sally, Elaine. Johanson, Graham, Johnson, or Detective Scott.”  She concludes, NO! She’s Yellowstone’s Child!  The Appendix contains a timeline & list of characters.  If you respond by email to this blog, you can buy a copy for $6.00 plus actual shipping cost.

Blood & Spiritual Warfare, Satan’s Lies Bring Death

For the last several weeks, I’ve blogged a series dealing with the nature of blood, and it’s portrayal of Spiritual Truth. Blood in Scripture is the source of life: “the life of the flesh is in the blood.” Blood sacrifices were used to atone for sin and in rites of purification, and finally, the blood of Christ brings everlasting life to those that believe. The three-fold nature of blood is 1) plasma (mostly water), 2) red cells (the bearers of life, oxygen) and the 3) Immune and protection system (clotting agents and immune system components).   Today, I’ll deal again with the blood’s immune and protection systems and their illustration of truth and deception.

The deceiver who brings death, in the blood is carbon monoxide (CO), and in the spiritual war, it’s Satan and his lies! CO deceives the body into thinking it‘s oxygen, (02) and brings death instead of life.   Satan comes as a deceiver who brings lies while the person believes they are getting the truth. The Bible speaks about this deception.

1 Corinthians 11:13-14 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.

Our physical body is easily deceived into accepting death instead of life. Usually, red blood cells carry life-giving oxygen to the body’s cells using the heart and circulatory system. If a person breathes an atmosphere containing CO, the lungs become filled with CO instead of air containing oxygen. When the red blood cells contact carbon monoxide in the lungs, they accept it as if it were O2 and carry it in place of oxygen. When CO gets to the cell, it has no life to bring so the body starts to die from lack of oxygen. Red blood cells are deceived into believing it was bringing life when it brought death.

In the spiritual war, we must breathe in truth, the Word of God, and avoid the lies of the world, the flesh and the devil for they poison our life and bring death.

John 8:44 He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks of his own: for he is a liar and the father of it.

We are vulnerable because of our sinful nature and are easily deceived so we must test everything especially the spirits.

1 John 4:1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

Jesus ultimately will destroy the harbinger of death, Satan, but now we must fight for truth in a world ruled by the father of lies. Breathe in TRUTH not the lies of the evil one.

The Memory Tree. A Gospel Christmas Story that can be read to children in about 10 minutes.

The Memory Tree is a Gospel Christmas Story that can be read to children in about 10 minutes. It’s a great read to give to your family for Christmas. The Gospel is very clearly presented.

Can a Christmas tree planted in memory of Ruth and Barry’s grandfather speak to their father, Harry? Harry’s been bitter for years about the death of his wife Charlotte on Christmas Eve years before. He asks, “How could a God that loves us let Charlotte die?” He never got an answer he could accept until he told the story about the memory tree.

“Why did one have to die for the other to live?” He asked the children, unsure himself of the answer. All the bitterness of all the years seemed to come back suddenly, and he began to feel tears well up in his eyes.

“That’s what Charlotte said, ‘He had to die to give us life,'” he almost shouted. He now understood that the tree had a message for him all along. All these years he hadn’t seen it. Jesus had to die so we could live. We couldn’t sacrifice ourselves; we weren’t worthy, but He was. Now it was all clear; Jesus had died to give him life. “O Lord how could I have been so blind!! I need you, Jesus,” he thought.

Richard Slazer was reading in John when he heard the tree fall. “Verily, verily, I say unto you, except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abides alone; but if it dies, it brings forth much fruit.” He got up from his chair and went out into the yard to look at the fallen tree. As he looked at the base where it had cracked and broken. He noticed a tiny branch poking it’s head up through the soil right next to the severed stump. Perhaps a new tree will grow in its place, he thought, as he hurried in to escape the coming storm.

This story has been produced by the author as a booklet and is now available on Amazon Kindle.

Helene at Mama Henney’s Boarding School for Girls. A story of my Grandmother, the child of French Aristocrats living in Germany in 1900. She is sent to an exclusive school in Northern Italy to help her recovery from Tuberculosis. Her adventures are both dramatic and exciting.

Lost in Yellowstone: Sarah Johanson disappears without a trace. This short story is the lead-in to the full-length novel “Yellowstone’s Child.” This story is complete in itself, telling how Sarah Johanson becomes Sally Graham.

Yellowstone’s Child: What’s her name? Sarah or Sally, Johanson or Graham or Johnson or Detective Elaine Scott? NO! It’s Yellowstone’s Child.

One Android, 399 lives: 59th Street Terrorist Attack Kills 399 The events of 9/11/2001 changed our perception of US vulnerability to terrorist attacks. The attack in San Bernardino that killed 14 and injured 22 is another example to heighten our alertness. These attacks raise our awareness of every person’s vulnerability to sudden unexpected death. This story tells of an attack planned and executed by Islamic terrorists in New York using an airplane much like 9/11.

Evolution Destroys Students Minds, Motivation, and Future!

Today I look at how teaching “where we came from,” impacts our children’s minds, motivation, and future.

Biblical Christian View: When we teach children the Biblical worldview, we teach:

“You are made in God’s image. You are marvelously constructed for purpose. But you are separated from God by you own sin and rebellion. God has provided a way to return to him through Jesus Christ. When you die, you go to be with him forever, or you will eternally perish in hell. Your life does not end at death! This life is birth, pain, pleasure, and struggle, but death has been defeated at the cross by Jesus. The best is yet to come: eternal life in Christ.” (Charlie Liebert 1995)

Atheistic Evolution View. Evolution begins with inanimate matter and brings all the variety of life on earth through a branching tree. Dead chemicals form the first one-celled organism from “pond scum.” Then, for millions of years, creatures evolve by mutation and natural selection to higher and higher forms until finally, an apelike ancestor gives birth to the first man and woman. Although we are the best nature can do, we are just the highest animal, and nothing better than all other animals below us. This Evolution cycle is a continuous process of reproduction, struggle, and death. If Evolution is true then:

  • There is no need for God; there is no sin and no need for a
  • Moral values have no basis and life has no meaning.
  • The man is not responsible for his actions because he’s just chemical & electrical impulses.
  • Humankind is the highest animal, and human life has the same value as other animals.
  • Mankind can be selectively bred, aborted, murdered, et, because of natural selection.
  • Death is the end of life, and you are annihilated.

In US public schools, Evolution is taught as fact, and there is no other explanation of “where we came from.” When we teach children the Evolutionary worldview, we teach them:

“You came from pond scum. You’re a bunch of chemical reactions and electrical impulses. You’re not any better than your pet dog or cat. Life has no meaning or purpose. Some day you will die, and when your life ends you will be extinguished or annihilated. You will go out of existence. Your body goes back to the earth, and your mind and life accomplishments come to nothing. So life is birth, pain, pleasure, struggle, and death.” (Charlie Liebert 1995)

When I talk to teens who believe Evolution, I hear, “Why continue living if life is so hopeless?” “What’s the point if I am going to die anyway?” My favorite from one of my seminars: “If when I die, my life amounts to nothing, then why live long? To die sooner is better.”

LESSON: The Bible says you reap what you sow. If we sow hopelessness because we believe Evolution, what shall we reap? The Biblical Christian and Atheistic Evolutionist are polar opposites! They are as far apart as you can get! One gives hope the other hopelessness. When we continue to sacrifice our children’s minds by teaching them Evolution alone we provide them with NO HOPE. Christ is the greatest hope.

Why I believe this BIG Universe is only 6,000 Years Old?

The age of the Universe is a major area of disagreement between Biblical Creationists and those that believe it is billions of years old. “Old Earthers” include Evolutionists, Atheistic, and religious, and Old Earth Creationists. I believe in a young Earth because of what the Bible says, but I want to understand it using science. Here are three scientific explanations that Young Earth Creationists use.

1) Decreasing the speed of light. When God created light on day one, the speed of light was almost infinite but has slowed to its current speed today making all distance measurements using light speed significantly overstated.

2) Creation with the appearance of age. Creation was made fully functioning, and the light from long distances was put in place at the moment of creation, just

3) Young Earth Cosmology developed by Dr. R. Humphreys, published in “Starlight and Time.” Using Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity and changing the assumptions from the “Big Bang” model he creation of a young universe that appears old. To get the equations to work for the Big Bang a series of assumptions (parameters) have to be set in the equations. These are; the 1) Universe contains no boundaries, 2) size is infinite, 3) has no edge, 4) no center of mass, 5) uniform distribution of matter, and 6) no net gravity effect. These assumptions are in direct contradiction to scientific observations. For example, it is VERY lumpy and does NOT have a uniform distribution of mass. When you set parameters in Einstein’s theory to conform to observed science, you get a young expanding Universe that appears old.

Here are two Biblical reasons I believe in a “Young Earth”:

1) The Bible is clear that death is a direct result of Adam’s sin, yet allcause they are accommodatingGod would have used death and struggle as a POSITIVE process to make progress in all the old Earth scenarios. That’s what evolution and NOT what the Bible says about death. A God, who uses death, is NOT the God of Scripture!!!

2) At the end of each Creation day, God says his process is good. At the end of the sixth day, Scripture says: “Then God saw everything that He hath made, and behold it was very good.” EVERYTHING was VERY GOOD. This expression implies a perfect Creation with no sin, death, rebellion, etc. “Old Earth” processes have the fall of Satan, death, sin, and all other kinds of imperfection present before the end of day six implying that the clear statement of Scripture either wasn’t “everything that He had made” or it wasn’t “very good. You can’t have any sin before the end of the sixth day because it’s in direct conflict with the clear words of Scripture.

Lesson: A young Universe, about 6,000 years old, is both Biblically and Scientifically sound. Christians can believe it with confidence.

Christian Dialogue: “Why do bad things happen to good people?”

Live life, watch the news, walk around, and this truth becomes very, very clear. Bad things happen all the time. No one is immune. You can’t buy health. You can’t buy safety. You can’t buy long life. You can’t undo a car accident. You can’t even add a second to your life. The world is a dangerous place. Bad things happen all the time. So, how does a Christian respond? I use a dialogue to answer this question in my book,  Always Be Ready to Give an Answer!

“I” is for Inquirer and “Me” is for you, the believer.

I: Why do bad things happen to good people?

Me: Define for me a bad thing.

I: (The answer will likely be about personal trial, loss, sickness, pain, suffering, or death.)

Me: Do you expect to escape this life without any of these?

I: Of course not! (Sometimes a person will say they do expect to have none of these. With that answer, I find a puzzled look makes them reconsider quickly.)

Me: Then ask me again. What’s the question?

I: Why do bad things happen to good people?

Me: What’s a bad thing? Let me give you an example of a bad thing. A young woman in her last year of high school dove into shallow water broke her neck and became a quadriplegic. Is that a bad thing?

I: (They agree, it‘s a bad thing.)

Me: The Bible says, “All things work together for good for those who are called by God.” Joni Erickson Tada’s life would probably have had little impact on the world if she had not had that accident. In her ministry, she advocates for the handicapped around the world and has given away many wheelchairs to many who never could have afforded one. So define for me again a bad thing.

I: (Answers will vary.) OK, now let’s wrap it up!)

Me: Bad things are going to happen because we can’t stop a particular trial, loss, pain, suffering, and death. We are powerless. We can sometimes delay the inevitable with our modern medicine, but we can’t prevent eventually dying. It is how we respond to these circumstances, not the circumstances themselves that bring about or change our attitude.  Jesus is the hope that I have.  (Now, share a short testimony.)  My hope is in Christ. He alone can give us a new perspective, grant us redemption, and restore us to God.  This world with all its personal trial, loss, pain, suffering, and death, will pass away, but God brings men and women to eternal life in Him. How about you?

To add depth, bring up Job, who is an excellent example of the “bad thing” issue.  Share his trials and reactions and cite the irony in Job’s wife’s advice: “Curse God and die.” Advice which Job doesn’t follow.

This question provides an opportunity to share the gospel, so in casual conversation, steer the discussion so that they ask this question.
