US Public Education’s Foundations, Christianity vs. Humanism

In a recent blog, I dealt with the two foundations of US Public Education, Christian Values, and Humanism. A comment posted by a reader asked: “What’s wrong with Humanism?” What’s wrong, Humanism’s tenets and foundations conflict with my Christian world in every area: History, Science, Literature and even Language, which I’ll deal with next week. As a Christian I want my children’s education to reflect my values, which begins with a foundation of a worldview and a set of presuppositions about the world where we live. Until in the early part of the 20th century, the US public education’s foundation was the Bible and Christian principles. It began to change in the middle of the 20th century, based on the influence of John Dewey and others. By the end of the 1980s US, education was based entirely on the principles of Humanism. Christianity was purged from the schools under the guise of “separation of church and state.” These two worldviews are at opposite positions on every aspect of our lives, only one can be education’s foundation. They are truly mutually exclusive. Education’s foundation must be based on either one of these value sets, but since it can be ONLY one, the other must be entirely excluded.

Here is a summary, created by this author, of their differences.

CATEGORY HUMANISM CHRISTIANITY

One more challenge: “In the history of the Christian church, many rulers, philosophers, kings, etc. have tried to destroy Christianity. They have even, at times, declared it dead. Why, after many centuries, haven’t they succeeded?”

In 1776, Voltaire, the French philosopher, announced, “One hundred years from my day there will not be a Bible in the earth except that is looked upon by some antique seeker.” One hundred years later, Voltaire was dead, and the Geneva Bible Society was using his house and press to print and store Bibles. One hundred years from the day of Voltaire’s prediction, the first edition of his works sold for eleven cents in Paris, but the British government paid the Czar of Russia half a million dollars for an ancient Bible manuscript. —Source: http://gewatkins.net/my-words-shall-notpass- away/ February 15, 2014, 7:00 p.m.

A Christian parent’s response to US Public Education’s Humanist foundations.

In the early part of the 20th century, the foundation of teaching was “Judeo/Christian Values.” These values undergirding most subjects, particularly history, social studies and science, all were based on Biblical principles. The system NOT was specifically Christian, but teaching was based on Biblical presuppositions and worldview. For example, when morality was addressed in any subject area the Ten Commandments was the foundation cited and was often posted in classrooms. Education began to change in the 1920s with the adoption of John Dewey’s Humanist principles. By the 1950s Humanist principles dominated. Prayer was banned from public schools in 1964. By 1970 the Humanist philosophy was firmly entrenched, and Christian beliefs were being driven out. By the 1980s all residue of Biblical teaching was not only removed from the schools but was banned under the banner of “separation of church and state.” Between the period preceding World War 2 (1940) and the early 1980s, education’s foundations changed from values based on absolute standards from the Bible to a relativistic morality system based on the Humanism and the Humanist Manifesto. These two worldviews are always at opposite positions on every aspect of our lives and the world. The chart enclosed with this blog is a summary of the contrast between them.

Humanism is a system of doctrine that appears religious; however, humanists deny this and call their system secular humanism to remove the stigma of it being a religious system. Calling Humanism non-religious is a smoke screen because the “Humanist Manifesto” contains multiple religious statements. In several cases before the US Supreme Court Humanism has been defined as a religion. Here’s a summary.

Humanism is a progressive philosophy of life that, without theism and other supernatural beliefs, affirms our ability and responsibility to lead ethical lives of personal fulfillment that aspire to the greater good of humanity.

They have several creedal statements, the latest of which is “Humanist Manifesto 3,” (2003), however “Humanist Manifesto 2” (1973) is much more comprehensive.

Christians who send their children to public schools need to recognize that Humanist presuppositions are the foundation of all subjects their children are taught. In my blog of 3/10/2017, we saw this even in language and math! Christian parents putting their kids in US public schools must carefully monitor their children’s knowledge and values. The church loses many students from Christian homes because of this Humanist foundation in education. Parents have to work hard to counter Humanist teaching. When children, who are brought up in Christian homes, go to college or just out on their own, they often “lose” their faith. I’ve counseled many parents whose child has returned from the first year of college to declare, “I don’t believe all that stuff about Jesus anymore!”  Many college professors work hard to destroy Christian students’ faith so they MUST be prepared BEFORE they graduate high school. Ken Ham has written several books, which I recommend, about losing these students.  Already Gone, Already Compromised and Ready to Return all by Ken Ham https://answersingenesis.org/store/product/ready-reformation-set/?sku=40-1-464

Relativistic education without absolutes is fatal to learning.

“Humanist Manifesto II,” promoted by John Dewey, is the foundation for US public education. Children in public schools are taught every subject based on Humanist presuppositions. Here are two examples where language/reading and mathematics remove absolutes and put relativism in its place.:

1) Using phonics to teach language starts with the absolutes—letters and sounds—and progresses to the relative—words and sentence formation. The look/say method begins with the relative and does not build a foundation of letters, so reading skills never fully develop. Look/say readers are frequently poorer readers than those taught by phonics. The absolute has to come before the relative because that’s how God designed it. As a child develops speech, he or she starts with sounds. Listening to a baby test his or her vocals is always interesting. We don’t expect them to begin with words. Word and sentence formation come after the sound development of the letters.

2) In mathematics, particularly Common Core, problem-solving methods are taught with little or no time spent on the mechanics of numbers. The absolutes in math are the numbers and their relationships: adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. Common Core starts with the relative and never teaches the absolutes of the basics of number structure. If you were born before the middle of the twentieth century, you probably remember memorizing the multiplication tables which, along with addition and subtraction, are the absolutes that build the math system all the way to calculus. Without the foundation of numbers and how they function, the mind won’t ever “get it.” Math becomes a mystery instead of a problem-solving tool. As a parent, look at the Common Core math-teaching materials: number lines, unnecessarily complicated calculations, etc. I could go on with more issues in science, history, and other subjects, but these two examples are enough to illustrate the point that learning and knowledge are always built on a foundation of absolutes.

There are many Christian teachers in public schools that base their teaching on Christian principles, but the “official” line is Humanism. In the 1970s I taught summer sessions on Biblical Creation at the NC Governor’s School, which is a summer program for top rising High School seniors, whose purpose is to “provoke critical thinking in students.” In year 4, I took a poll asking students: “Who believes in some form of Creation?” and about half raised their hands. This opportunity ended abruptly when several humanist teachers in the room saw half the hands go up for Creation. My contact person, a Christian, later told me the ones that ran the program were very upset because I had so many convincing arguments for Creation and against Evolution. It was evident to me that in public schools you could only teach according to humanist presuppositions, so much for the First Amendment in education. Presenting only one side of any axiom, like Evolution destroys critical thinking in students and makes “political correctness” the result. They become advocates for Evolution, without any reason or foundation for their beliefs.

SIX Education Myths: Over-population, Short Natural Resources, Evolution, One-World Government, Socialism, & Climate Change

The Humanistic foundation of US Public Education promotes six politically motivated popular myths in today’s classrooms.

  1. Over-population, too many people on the planet.
  2. Shortage of natural resources, not enough food for everyone.
  3. Evolution, you came from pond scum and are going to dirt.
  4. One world government, we won’t survive without central control.
  5. Socialism is a successful economic system.
  6. Climate Change & Global Warming will kill us all.

All six are FALSE.

Over-Population. As I rode around my former home state of North Carolina, I never ceased to be amazed at the tremendous amount of empty land, and this is true all over the world. We are indebted to Gary Newell for the following illustration on population. “If we gave every person about two and one-half square feet, about enough space to stand and turn around, how much space is needed for the whole world population? They would all fit within the city limits of Jacksonville, Florida.” If that’s true then why do we have starvation in some parts of the world? Do we have a shortage of natural resources?

Shortage of Natural Resources. The most commonly cited illustration of the not enough food is the country of India, where starvation is common. India produces sufficient food to feed all its population and export one-third to fee other countries of Asia. Why then do they starve? It’s because they have a religious system that: 1) not only allows large amounts of food to be eaten by the “sacred animals” but 2) does not let the people eat the animals that are readily available. Starvation in India is a religious, or spiritual darkness problem not a shortage of resources. People may also starve because of: war, localized famine, crop failures, unfavorable weather, etc. but overall there is enough food for everyone if we could eat what’s available.

Evolution. Atheistic Evolution is impossible, NOT improbable, IMPOSSIBLE! It has to break three scientific laws to succeed. All the “missing links” are still missing. It has to defy logic in the design of living organisms. It has to invent information without intelligence. But the real issue is the Roman’s 1 problem. “…their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools.” For information about Evolution see the books I’ve published ANSWERS For “The Hope That Is In You” and to be released soon “Without 3 Miracles Darwin’s Dead.”

One World Government & Socialism. Both of these political ideas are pushed in texts dealing with government, civics, social studies, etc. Never in any of these have either one of these views been criticized or analyzed in an objective fashion. They are portrayed as Utopian solutions.

Climate Change and Global Warming. This myth has very contradictory scientific data, and apocalyptic predictions about the future have not been fulfilled. Al Gore predicted the Polar icecap would melt by now but it’s still very large. The Antarctic ice cap today is larger than many previous years.

Political Correctness – suppresses critical thinking, muzzles free speech, prevents dialogue and perpetuates lies.

Political correctness is one of the greatest barriers to addressing society’s problems today because it stifles critical thinking, muzzles free speech, prevents dialogues and perpetuates lies. A simple definition of “Political Correctness” (PC) is attitude, behavior or policy that does not offend, distress or upset any group in society who are a unique, religious, political, racial, social, etc.

Solutions to societies problems start with dialogue and critical thinking. To address a problem, first, list all alternatives. In the question of our origin, an Atheist will never consider Theistic Evolution or Biblical Creation and likewise the Christian will not believe Atheistic Evolution. Each one’s inherent bias has eliminated some of the possible answers. Because you don’t like something does not mean it is not a possible solution. Once you list all alternatives, analyze them in depth, listing advantages and disadvantages. Understanding all the aspects of every option, without negative bias, is critical to get the best solution.

One barrier for best solutions is every person’s worldview and presuppositions. Using critical thinking to achieve the best results is possible if one can put aside one’s biases.

So, what is “Political Correctness”? Here’s a simple definition. “You are only allowed to think the way I think. If you don’t, you must be censured and silenced.” In PC the right to offend is ALWAYS eliminated. PC flies in the face of everything we know about freedom and free speech in particular! Another way to say this is: “Only group think is allowed. Don’t think on your own!”

Political Correctness began in the late 1980s as a quick way of conveying concern about the leftist influence in the Universities, media, and culture. PC referred to academic policies that moved the content of the college curriculum away from academic studies into the social modification of student’s behavior. PC is also called “the culture war.”

PC’s underlying concept is that everyone should “be nice” to everyone else and not critical or unkind anyone. To “be PC nice” is absurd and foolish given the diverse nature of humans. PC prevents honest dialogue. A good example of this is the deterioration of race relations in the US from 2008 to 2016. PC has suppressed and prevented any real dialogue between the competing groups and lies and stereotypes on both sides are perpetuated and cause further division. For example, the PCs “white privilege” vs. “black lives matter” vs. “deplorable ones” have made matters worse and have led us away from possible solutions.

PC suppresses speech rather than freeing it and is a clear violation of the principles of the first amendment. “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” It’s time we started to talking to each other about our problems instead of throwing rocks or cursing.

Censorship of Christian Viewpoints in a Free Society

th

The question of Creation vs. Evolution is not freely discussed today in US culture. Censorship and indoctrination are used to promote Evolution in all public schools and most schools of higher education. The media will not report anything that would question belief in Evolution and will consistently distort creationist news and views. If you want more evidence to confirm this, go to the Ark Encounter Web site and review the negative publicity, or examine the history of the opposition to building the Creation Museum in Kentucky. This origins censorship is viewpoint discrimination and a clear, direct violation of First Amendment freedom! As Christians, we must be aware of it and speak out against it at every opportunity.

The United States today is far from the nation the founders envisioned; however, there are still some Christian principles partially underlying our culture:

  • A government established based on the consent of the governed, of the people by the people, and for the people.
  • The moral compass of right or wrong based on the Bible and the Ten Commandments.
  • God-given individual rights and responsibilities as recognized by both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.
  • Unlimited economic opportunity based on a free enterprise system, i.e. Bill Gates, Michael Dell, and many more.
  • Specific freedoms for the people enumerated in the first ten amendments to the Constitution: free speech, free press, ownership of private property, the right to assembly, constraints on government search and seizure, etc.

Applying these principles should assure open dialogue on the matter of Creation vs. Evolution, but that is not the case. In many parts of US, no discussion of origins is allowed: in most media, in public schools, and a majority of institutions of higher learning.

I had one evolutionary university professor come to my Web page to tell me, “We teach our students, ‘Evolution is true. Don’t question it!'” If students doubt they’re told, “Shut up and accept it or you fail this course.”

My friend Bob Kelly and I were invited to teach Creation at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro in the late 1980s. We taught three one-hour sessions. After the last class, the department head took us to lunch to thank us for our time since we weren’t paid an honorarium. He told us, “Although we appreciate your time, we will never invite you back again because you did not play fair in your presentation.” Confused, Bob asked, “How did we play unfairly?” Somewhat frustrated, he said, “You told our students things we would never teach them.” I asked for examples, and he exclaimed angrily, “The gaps in the fossil record, the irreducible complexity of living organisms, the information content in genetics, and much, much more!” It was apparent to both Bob and I that he was not interested in education but in presenting only the Evolution view to recruit believers and fortifying those that already believed. That’s propaganda, not education. A real education includes looking at all sides of an issue.

As Christians we MUST defend our right to speak TRUTH or we will loose it. Political correctness must never take precedence over freedom to speak!

Don’t speak about Creation! Origins Censorship in the US.

The first Amendment to the Constitution guarantees freedom of speech. Free discussion of the question of: “Where did I come from?” is suppressed throughout the USA. Comparing or even talking about Biblical Creation vs. Darwinian Evolution is not allowed in public education, even at the college level, and in many other places in the public forum. WHY? Consider three principles that directly impact why? 1) Origins censorship 2) Cultural Foundations 3) Cultural Endurance.

Principle 1: Origins Censorship. The question of origins is not freely discussed in U  to promote evolution in all public schools and most schools of higher education. The media will not report anything that would question belief in evolution and consistently distorts creationist news and views. If you want more evidence to confirm this principle, go to the   Creation Museum in Kentucky. This origins censorship is viewpoint discrimination and a clear, direct violation of First Amendment freedom! As Christians, we must be aware of it and speak out against it at every opportunity.

Principle 2: Cultural Foundations. Principles of freedom, liberty, and equality only thrive in a culture that recognizes the God of the Bible. In my book, ANSWERS For: “The Hope That Is In You.” I compare the US revolution of 1776 to the French revolution of 1789 to illustrate the need for Biblical faith to make a free society. The US revolution led to our founding and the French revolution led to the “reign of terror.” Without God, a culture descends into depravity. Humanism and Atheism as ruling principles bring oppression, not freedom. Read Humanist Manifesto II and note how it regards other belief systems with contempt, especially Christianity. Nations degenerate without Biblical principles as foundations!

Principle 3: Cultural Endurance. No nation survives long range. Eventually, every nation becomes corrupt and collapses because human depravity increases until it takes control of the political system. This decay comes from within the culture. In the US, this is illustrated by our regard for human life, abortion, euthanasia and, coming soon, infanticide. No nation in history is exempt, not even Israel. The United States today, in the early part of the twenty-first century, is in the last stages of this life cycle. Unless revival comes, collapse is imminent.

Christians should consider these five principles of Origins censorship.

1) There is intolerance for debate on the origins issue in the public forum, in both education and the press. Expect strong opposition in both!

2) In our private relationships, we still have freedom to discuss the question of origins with the unbelievers we encounter every day.

3) Societies that do not recognize God do not survive long. Truth

4) Any Humanistic or Atheistic based political system is a miserable, oppressive failure. They have never succeeded: 1789 France, Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union, and many more.

5) Because all nations eventually fail and fall, we trust Christ alone for our security.
