Share the Gospel this Christmas by reading my short story “The Memory Tree” to your family. It’s on Kindle.

“The Memory Tree” is a short Christmas story written by Charlie Liebert.  Reading it to your family is an easy and effective way to share the gospel at Christmas dinner or when you tell stories around the tree. It can be read in about 15 minutes. Some readers have used the story as a script to tell the story as a skit or play.

Can a Christmas tree planted, more than 50 years ago, in memory of Ruth and Barry’s grandfather speak to their father, Harry?  Harry’s been bitter for years about the death of his wife Charlotte on Christmas Eve.  Harry’s memory went back to that afternoon 28 years before. Charlotte shouting; “Harry!” as the truck suddenly appeared out of the rain.  The sound of the crash was deafening.  Harry awoke, aware of being wet and some hands on his shoulder.  The awful pain in his back made everything seem fuzzy.  He heard someone say, “This one’s still alive, but the woman’s dead.”

His grandson Barry poked him, and he came back to the present.  Before he continued telling the story, he asked, in his mind: “How could a God that loves us let Charlotte die?”  He’d never gotten an answer he could accept.

He continued: “Why did one tree have to die for the other to live?” He asked the children, unsure himself of the answer.  All the bitterness of the years came back suddenly, and he felt tears well up in his eyes.

“That’s what Charlotte said, ‘He had to die to give us life,'” he almost shouted.  He understood that the tree had a message for him all along.  All these years he hadn’t seen it.  Jesus had to die so we could live.  We couldn’t sacrifice ourselves, we weren’t worthy, but He was worthy to pay our debt.  Now it was clear, Jesus had died to give Harry life.  “O Lord how could I have been so blind!!  I need you, Jesus,” he thought.

Author’s Note: Pause, if necessary to clarify the Gospel.[

Ten years later Harry lay on the bed overlooking the backyard.  The tree was now old like him and ready to die.  The last ten years had been kind to him, and he had many chances to share Jesus.  But now the end was almost here.  It looked like another winter storm.  In the darkening sky, the wind blew strong.  Just as Harry breathed out his last breath, the wind picked up and the memory tree cracked at the base and fell into the Slazer’s yard.

Richard Slazer was reading in John when he heard the tree fall.  “Verily, verily, I say unto you, except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abides alone; but if it dies, it brings forth much fruit.”  Richard got up from his chair and went out into the yard to look at the fallen tree.  As he looked at the base where it had cracked and broken, he noticed a tiny branch poking its head up through the soil next to the broken stump. Perhaps a new tree will grow in its place, he thought, as he hurried in to escape the coming storm.

Charlie’s Born Again in 1977

This week’s blog shares my short testimony of coming to Jesus in 1977.  More extended versions are in my book “Always Be Ready to Give an Answer!  A Former Atheist’s Personal Christian Evangelism Plan.”

I grew up in the small town of Amityville on Long Island. My parents took my two sisters and me to a large, mainline, liberal church almost every Sunday. At sixteen years old, I became acutely aware of the hypocrisy of the church members. So, I mentally shut off anything the church had to say.  By the time I was twenty-four and approaching completion of my BS in chemistry, I had become a staunch Atheist.  Living in New Jersey and met my future wife, Terry, through one of my roommates, her cousin. We married, had our first child, and moved to Rockland County, NY.  Although marriage had brought some changes, I was falling more and more into sinful practices. We had our second child, and my company moved us to Greensboro, NC. By this time, I was viewing pornography and well on the way to becoming an alcoholic. Terry and I talked seriously about divorce. My life was coming apart, and there seemed to be nothing I could do about it.  We had lost all Sunday family gatherings when we moved to NC so, Sunday became a barren time. In Greensboro, most of our neighbors and fellow workers went to church, so we began to attend an Episcopal church. It was the right place for Terry, the ex-Catholic, and Charlie, the ex-Methodist. Nothing came from the pulpit that challenged either one of us, but there were three families in that church whose lives were very different. I couldn’t explain how, but I knew they were different. We did a Bible study with them called “Edge of Adventure,” and our marriage relationship improved for a short time. The study was over, and we went back to the way it was: bad! Later that year one of the men from that group suggested I attend a men’s weekend retreat in Asheville. Terry encouraged me to go. After all, it was a chance to get away from all my problems.

At the beginning of the weekend, on Thursday, we gave up our watches so we would not be concerned about time. On Friday morning, after breakfast, the first speaker asked three questions. “What is your purpose in life? Where are you going? What does it all mean?” As I sat there, I realized I had no real answers. Yes, I had a wife, two children, a house, and two cars, but I knew that was not the answer. These questions bothered me all weekend. After many talks I hardly remember, I went into the chapel alone on Saturday night because I was so troubled by these issues. I knelt and began to think and remember.

I remembered sitting in the apartment in New Jersey, before I met Terry, with my other roommates, drinking beer and watching Billy Graham on TV. We made great fun of his telling; we were lost sinners and needed Jesus. I remembered a high school friend, Frank, that had witnessed to me when I was working on my MBA.  But now those things suddenly seemed real. I said in my mind, God, if you’re real (and I wasn’t sure if he was), you can have my life because it is an awful mess. (God, true to his word, took it.)

In the next moments, there was someone in the room with me that I could not see, but I felt his presence. Something strange had happened, and I did not know yet what it was.  When I came back home to Greensboro, I came down into the den where Terry was watching TV. Her first reaction was “What happened to you. Did you see God?” There was a change in my countenance that I couldn’t explain. I wasn’t sure, but I too knew something had happened. Going back to my daily routine, I immediately developed an adamant desire to read the Bible. I asked the friend who had invited me to the retreat where I should start. He said the Gospel of John. When I got to John, Chapter 3, where Nicodemus encounters Jesus, I read about being born again. That’s what happened to me! I called my friend, and he confirmed it. Yes, I was born again.

Charlie Liebert’s Christian Testimony of Being Saved by Grace. Today I share my first written reaction by grace.

My blogs for the next several weeks will be devoted to my journey in Christ.  I became a Christian on March 20, 1977, at age 35, at a men’s retreat in Ashville, N.C. My conversion was both sudden and dramatic.  Years later my peers at work would joke about the “old” Charlie and the “new” Charlie. As I often told them: “the beer drinking, Playboy reading, dirty joke telling, cussing Charlie died in 1977, and a new person took his place. “Therefore, if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature, old things are passed away, all things become new.”  From my recent writing, you will find, that I haven’t forgotten where I came from.  I know I am a lost sinner saved by grace.  The Apostle Paul after listing many different sins including those I listed as mine above says: “AND SUCH WERE SOME OF YOU.  Yes, I needed God’s grace for Jesus to pay the debt of sin I could only pay by dying and going to Hell myself.  Next week I will give a short version of my testimony.

Salvation came to me March 20, 1977.  (My testimony in poem)

Written by Charles William Liebert on June 3, 1977

Many a young man seeks “pie in the sky.”

Most important to me was never to die.

As I grew older, I saw death “face to face.”

But I, would never come, to that lonely place.

Grandpa, grandma and a young friend,

One at a time came to their end.

My wife became ill; I feared she would die,

There must be more to life than seen with my eye.

I work, I come home, I yell at the kids.

I yell at my wife. She does as I bid.

I roll around in a great hollow ball,

Not satisfied with anything, myself most of all.

My thirsting for “things” has become insatiable.

Now pushing myself hard, to all I am able.

And now several people I know quite well,

Leave this world and pass on to Heaven or Hell?

A great revelation now comes upon me

I too will die.  O woe, woe is me!

What difference will my life make, when it ends?

I seek for the truth with a small group of friends.

I remember some things I learned as a boy;

God is love; God is life, God is peace, God is joy.

Now I have seen what I must do?

I must love God first and my brother too.

I had now passed from death into life

and very soon after life comes to my wife.

And now I begin renewing my mind

My world upside down, I soon clearly find.

To you whom I speak, What will you be?

A prisoner in bondage or a man set free.

Now listen to me, I have one thing to say,

I pray you find Christ fore the end of your day.

UPDATE on Charlie Liebert’s work as an Author; Three books, six stories, and more coming.

I started my career as an author at age 70 in 2012, and now late in 2017, I’ve published three books on Christian Apologetics:  Always Be Ready to Give an Answer!

ANSWERS For, “The Hope That Is In You.”  and

Without 3 Miracles Darwin’s Dead!

I’ve also written six stories available on Amazon Kindle.

In the fall of 2102, I was teaching a Christian Business Men’s group a series of lessons on personal evangelism.  Week after week I heard a familiar refrain, “I don’t share the Gospel because of all questions I can’t answer that my unbelieving friends and family ask me.”  When Jesus was asked questions, he frequently answered them with another question to expose the person’s motives and presuppositions.  He was using a strategy anyone can use to get to the Gospel without directly answering their query.  Based on 12 years of teaching experience, I developed lesson plans for each evangelism lesson.  As I shared this experience with one of my spiritual mentors, Bob said, “Why don’t you write a book explaining this concept?  So, wrote Always Be Ready to Give an Answer!  After a lot of Bible study, I saw Jesus used this approach, answering a question with a question to expose the questioner’s motives and presuppositions.  After I’d completed an outline and several chapters, I discussed this concept with a Christian brother, and he said, ”… but eventually, you need to answer their questions.”

In the middle 1980s, I built a web page http://www.sixdaycreation.com that allowed readers to ask questions that I’d answer.  After more than 20 years of Q and A, I had answers to over 100 common questions the world asks Christians.  So, was born my second book, ANSWERS For, “The Hope That Is In You.  In addition to 106 QandAs, I added analysis of the differences between Biblical Creation and Atheistic Evolution.  Both books are available at http://yourchristiananswers.com

As was editing ANSWERS, I realized although I’d been critical of Evolution, I hadn’t made a strong case against it.  So, the concept for book three was born, Without 3 Miracles Darwin’s DEAD!  I gave the three miracles each a name.

Magic, something coming into being from nothing,

Frankenstein, living organisms coming from dead chemicals and

Uphill Molasses, the upward flow of the ever-increasing complexity of Evolution in a Universe that is running down.  http://yourchristiananswers.com

Amazon’s Kindle Stories.

Helene [Hel-lain-a] at Mama Henney’s Boarding School for Girls. My grandmother’s adventures as a 16-18-year-old at an all-girls school for aristocrats in 1900 northern Italy.

Rosemarie, Kristallnacht Transformation. My twice Jewish aunt’s, with a Jewish father and Jewish husband, amazing survival during the Holocaust in Germany 1937-1945.

Yellowstone’s Child.  Kidnapped at 10 with complete amnesia she recovers her memory at 22.  Rated “G.”  Great story for teens.

One Android, 399 lives – 59th Street Terror Attack Kills 399. Fictional NY terrorist attack.

The Memory Tree, A Christmas Story.  A great read for families at Christmas gatherings.  It takes 15-20 minutes to read.  For all ages, it presents the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

The Curse of the Witch of Zahlendorf.  A 17th-century German folk tale told by my father that includes the 1922 fulfillment of the curse.

Q: Why did Charlie Liebert write “Without 3 Miracles Darwin’s Dead!”? A: To show “Science Proves Atheistic Evolution Is IMPOSSIBLE!”

Newsflash:  My efforts to raise $6,000 for marketing “Without 3 Miracles Darwin’s Dead!” has reached $5,775 with only one week left in my seven-week campaign.  Please contribute TODAY @ https://igg.me/at/W3MDD.  A contribution of $50 gets a softback copy of this book and $150 a hardback copy.  Get yours by contributing today!

In Charlie Liebert’s first book Always Be Ready to Give an Answer! he developed an effective personal Christian evangelism strategy to get past unbelievers questions and present the Gospel in all Christian encounters. After one of his spiritual mentors asked, “Well, shouldn’t you answer the questions?” he wrote his second book, ANSWERS For “The Hope That Is In You!”  It answers more than 100 questions commonly asked by unbelievers to stump or silence Christians.

Charlie says: “As I was finishing ANSWERS … I realized that although I’d compared Creation and Evolution in that book, I had not shown the IMPOSSIBILITY of Atheistic Evolution. So now, in my third book, Without 3 Miracles Darwin’s Dead! Science Proves Atheistic Evolution is IMPOSSIBLE! I expose that impossibility:

  • Evolution is NOT science; it’s a faith statement about the past!
  • Evolution breaks three unbreakable scientific laws, and that’s impossible! Scientific laws CAN’T ever be broken, and remain laws.
  • Evolution’s never been observed in a laboratory or the field. Dr. Richard Dawkins said. “Evolution has been observed. It’s just that it hasn’t been observed when it’s happening.”
  • The missing links between apes and men are ALL still missing,
  • There are some creatures whose behavior, design or complexity Evolution cannot explain.
  • The history of Evolution contains many frauds, and I’ll highlight two of them.

How do Evolution proponents address these issues? Denial, rationalization or just plain lying! They can’t answer these problems, and they know it.  It’s true; Science Proves Atheistic Evolution is IMPOSSIBLE!”

Evolution has damaging effects on our culture and wastes resources that could be used to improve health and living conditions in the US. Millions of tax dollars are spent on evolutionary research that will NEVER bring value to humanity.  It’s a waste of resources based on a lie.

Both Creation and Evolution seek to answer the question: “Where did we come from?” The only reasonable answer is, “We are created in God’s image for purpose.” We did not originate from an explosion of Hydrogen gas and ascend out of pond scum!

This book asks and answers the question, “Is Atheistic Evolution possible?” In the mind of any intelligent, open-minded person the answer must be, “Science Proves Atheistic Evolution is IMPOSSIBLE!”

Yellowstone’s Child, my first novel is now available on Amazon Kindle.

front-coverback-cover    We deviate this week from my primary theme, Christian Apologetics, to introduce my first novel.   The theme of Yellowstone’s Child’s is personal identity, how one answers the question, “Who am I?” The story begins when a married couple, Sam and Gloria Graham, chicken farmers from Mississippi, loose their 10-year-old  daughter, Sally, to brain cancer. After her death, they plan to sell their Mississippi farm and to move to Nebraska. To help recover from Sally’s death; they take a short vacation in February at Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. At the same time, at Yellowstone, three cousins from the Johanson family reunion fall into a river partially fed by hot springs. Two get right out but the third, Sarah, hits her head and floats away on her back downstream. The Grahams rescue her and discover she has complete amnesia. They kidnap her and take back to Mississippi to replace their dead daughter. Park Rangers and Sarah’s family search the river in Yellowstone but do not recover her body. Sarah is eventually declared dead. In Mississippi, the Grahams inherit significant wealth, move to Nebraska, change their identities and move again to Ventura CA as Sam, Gloria, and Sally Johnson. Sarah, now Sally, still with complete amnesia, enters an all girls private school that specializes in preparing girls for careers in movies and TV. She starts in 6th grade at Ventura Private School for Girls and graduates seven years later. During each school year, 6th through 12th, another secret about her identity develops that must be kept from her by her parents. After graduating from VPSG, she earns a BA in Music, Theater, and Dance from Cal State. About to finish her Masters, she has an auto accident, bumps her head and her memory of her life before she was ten years old returns. She obtains a starring role in the TV series DETECTIVES LIVE as Detective Elaine Scott. She confronts her “parents”; they admit to kidnapping her, and she then begins to search for her real identity. She asks, “Who am I? Sarah, Sally, or Elaine. Johanson, Graham, Johnson, or Detective Scott.” She concludes, NO she’s Yellowstone’s Child.

If this story were a movie, it would be rated “G” and is suitable for teens. Readers complain that they weren’t able to put the story down once they got to Yellowstone National Park. There are two underlying messages in Yellowstone’s Child. First, the reader will recognize humankind’s imperfection. All my characters are real people and none of them are perfect or infallible. Second, as the plot unfolds, it shows that life is uncertain and often unpredictable. Since, as a Christian, I won’t use sex or violence to attract readers I opted for drama, plot reversals and “the story” within the story to keep reader interest. One of my first readers complained: “Yellowstone’s Child made me cry five times, twice for sadness, and three times for joy.”   It’s that kind of a story! It’ll make an excellent TV miniseries. It contains a timeline and a list of characters to help the reader follow the story.

Charlie is the author of “Always Be Ready to Give an Answer!” which develops an evangelism strategy that gets to the Gospel every time you witness. His second book ANSWERS For “The Hope That Is In You.” contains answers to more than 100 questions skeptics use to try to stump Christians. My third book, “Without 3 Miracles Darwin’s DEAD!” is currently in the final editing process and will be published later this year. http://yourchristiananswers.com

The Memory Tree. A Gospel Christmas Story that can be read to children in about 10 minutes.

The Memory Tree is a Gospel Christmas Story that can be read to children in about 10 minutes. It’s a great read to give to your family for Christmas. The Gospel is very clearly presented.

Can a Christmas tree planted in memory of Ruth and Barry’s grandfather speak to their father, Harry? Harry’s been bitter for years about the death of his wife Charlotte on Christmas Eve years before. He asks, “How could a God that loves us let Charlotte die?” He never got an answer he could accept until he told the story about the memory tree.

“Why did one have to die for the other to live?” He asked the children, unsure himself of the answer. All the bitterness of all the years seemed to come back suddenly, and he began to feel tears well up in his eyes.

“That’s what Charlotte said, ‘He had to die to give us life,'” he almost shouted. He now understood that the tree had a message for him all along. All these years he hadn’t seen it. Jesus had to die so we could live. We couldn’t sacrifice ourselves; we weren’t worthy, but He was. Now it was all clear; Jesus had died to give him life. “O Lord how could I have been so blind!! I need you, Jesus,” he thought.

Richard Slazer was reading in John when he heard the tree fall. “Verily, verily, I say unto you, except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abides alone; but if it dies, it brings forth much fruit.” He got up from his chair and went out into the yard to look at the fallen tree. As he looked at the base where it had cracked and broken. He noticed a tiny branch poking it’s head up through the soil right next to the severed stump. Perhaps a new tree will grow in its place, he thought, as he hurried in to escape the coming storm.

This story has been produced by the author as a booklet and is now available on Amazon Kindle. https://www.amazon.es/Memory-Tree-Christmas-Charlie-Liebert-ebook/dp/B00WTNWAMC

Other short stories written by Charlie Liebert available On Amazon are

Lost in Yellowstone: Sarah Johanson disappears without a trace. This short story is the lead-in to the full-length novel “Yellowstone’s Child.” This story is complete in itself, telling how Sarah Johanson becomes Sally Graham.

Yellowstone’s Child: What’s her name? Sarah or Sally, Johanson or Graham or Johnson or Detective Elaine Scott? NO! It’s Yellowstone’s Child.

One Android, 399 lives: 59th Street Terrorist Attack Kills 399 The events of 9/11/2001 changed our perception of US vulnerability to terrorist attacks. The attack in San Bernardino that killed 14 and injured 22 is another example to heighten our alertness. These attacks raise our awareness of every person’s vulnerability to sudden unexpected death. This story tells of an attack planned and executed by Islamic terrorists in New York using an airplane much like 9/11.
