Two Liebert Family Stories of Survival, Life, and Death.

This week I’m blogging two excerpts from my book: Liebert Annals in Deutschland, Our Complete German History. The blogs are taken from the short stories: Rosemarie, Kristallnacht Transformation. And Helene at Mama Henney’s Boarding School for Girls. For info go to  http://sixdaycreation.com or find on Kindle/Amazon.com

Rosemarie, Kristallnacht Transformation is the story of how my twice Jewish aunt, survives the Holocaust as her gentile cousin Olga Quandt.  Twice Jewish because she was the daughter of and married to a Jew. It’s Berlin, Germany, the day after Kristallnacht.  Her uncles’ Jewelry store’s been looted and all 19 family members disappeared.  She knew she had to find a way to hide.  The “escape bag” of diamonds hidden under the store’s floorboards could let her become her dead cousin Olga because she died in Africa with no record of her death in Germany.

EXCERPT: Berlin, downtown, 11/12/1938 1:15 AM.  Rosemarie stopped at the corner and looked down the street toward her uncles Hans and Fritz’s Jewelry store.  As she expected the windows were broken and the glass and other remnants of the previous night’s looting were still on the sidewalk.  On the far corner, two Gestapo stood under the street light smoking. The advertising sign that usually hung in the window  “Diamanten und Gold Zuverkaufen” (Diamonds and Gold For Sale) was on the sidewalk below the window.  Painted on it in large, red letters was the word JUDEN! She knew she had to see if the “escape bag” was still there, but she would have to wait until the SS was gone.  That bag could be the difference between life and death!

Helene at Mama Henney’s Boarding School for Girls.  From 1898 until 1901 my Grandmother Helene was in Italy at a school for aristocratic girls from all over Europe with lung diseases that could be helped by the Italian climate.  Three times a year Europe’s ruling aristocrats would bring their sons to a school ball to meet potential wives.  Preparation for the annual Departure Ball, Friday, June 24, 1898, included Wednesday and Thursday afternoon dance practice sessions.  On Thursday, Heidi arrived from Munich.  She was very ill with TB so, she knows she can only dance a few times, so she asks for the best dancer, Helene, my grandmother.

EXCERPT:Heidi’s Last Dance.   Helene tells Heidi’s story to her children in 1922: “For music we just had one violinist to play waltzes.  After our first dance, Heidi is very, very tired. She collapses into a chair and immediately falls asleep.  About an hour later, after her second dance she coughs up blood for several minutes, and her father tells her: “No more dancing.”  Another hour later, Heidi’s father’s gone, and dance practice is about to end. Although she looks exhausted, she insists on dancing one last time.  I help her out of the chair onto the dance floor.  Heidi whispers in my ear: “Hold on to me very tight.  I don’t feel strong.”  She lays her head on my shoulder and sighs, her last breath. Thinking she fainted, I carry her to a chair and let her down slowly.  Her parents rush over, but she’s gone.  Her parents thank me for, ‘making Heidi’s last hour happy.’  All the girls in the school, except Gretta, wore black armbands for the next month.”

Charlie’s Publishing Assistance for Kindle eBook and Paperback.

This week I’m announcing my new endeavor to help unpublished authors get their book into a marketable form on Kindle and Amazon.  Charlie Liebert, experienced author will help publish your book on Kindle as an eBook and convert it to a paperback for less than $1,000.  Charlie has 14 eBooks on Kindle and 11 have also been published in paperback.  Send me a manuscript of at least 50 pages and I’ll get it on Kindle and in paperback. It’s easy and cheap.  Here’s the steps.

1) Send me your email address, mailing address (P.O. is OK), manuscript, cover page and $250.  Manuscripts more than 100 pages will cost $1.50 for every page over 100.   If you don’t have a cover page I can help you create one which costs $150 paid only after your approval. The first three cover iterations are free.  More than three are $35 each.

2) I’ll establish an account at Kindle Direct Publishing with your email and set up your book as an eBook.  When you approve the eBook on Kindle, pay an additional $250.  You can stop here or go on to create a paperback.

3) I’ll convert your book to a 6” by 9” paperback.  All my templates are set for 6X9 so any other size will require additional costs.  I’ll format the book, create a title page and table of contents.  I’ll NOT edit to correct spelling or grammar. When ready you’ll receive a paperback proof copy to approve.  You review it up to three separate times and make changes to your preferences.  Editing changes for spelling or grammar cost $2.00 each.  Additional reviews above the initial three cost $35 each.

4) When you approve the final version, you pay $250 and I’ll turn the account over to you and we’re done.  You now have a KDP account, an eBook on Kindle and a paperback listed on Amazon all for less than $800.  Your estimated costs to purchase paperbacks as the author are:

How my twice Jewish Aunt survived the Holocaust. “Rosemarie, Kristallnacht Transformation.”

“Rosemarie, Kristallnacht Transformation”  available on Kindle and Amazon, is the amazing true story of how my Jewish aunt survived the Holocaust.  Rosemarie Liebert was twice a Jew.  She was the daughter of a Jew, and she had beenmarried to a deceased Jew.  It’s Berlin, Germany, November 12, 1938 the day after Kristallnacht.  Her uncle’s Jewelry store has been looted.  All 19 members of her three uncle’s families disappeared.  She knew now she had to find a way to hide.  The “escape bag” filed with diamonds could save her by letting her become her dead cousin Olga.   Olga died in Africa with no record of her death in Germany.  .  The Gestapo’s pursuit is relentless. Rosemarie, the twice Jew, survives the Holocaust as the gentile Olga Julia Quandt

Berlin, downtown, November 12, 1938, 1:15 AM. The advertising sign that usually hung in the window  “Diamanten und Gold zu verkaufen” (Diamonds and Gold For Sale) was on the sidewalk below the window.  Painted on it in large, red letters was the word JUDEN! She knew she had to see if the “escape bag” was still there, but she would have to wait until the SS was gone.  That bag could be the difference between life and death.  As she stood there waiting she thought:  “How did I ever get to this situation?”  As she stood atthe corner waiting, her thoughts flashed back to some of her life events

Brussels, Gestapo HQ 12/23/1941:Two Gestapo officers with one man and one woman dressed in civilian clothes entered and sat in the four opposite chairs.  Only the woman smiled.  The uniformed officer that sat almost directly opposite Olga opened a folder and began to read.

“Your papers indicate you are Olga Julia Quandt. You were born in Munich on May 16, 1908, to Shavoy and Marie Quandt.  Is that true?”

Olga/Rosemarie realized they were already trying to trap her. “No, that is not true.  I was born in Berlin on June 16, 1908.”

The officer smiled and sarcastically said: “Very good.  You know when and where you were born.  Now let us review our problem. We have a record of you leaving Germany in 1936, but we can find no record of your return to Germany.  How and when did you come back?”

Olga realized she was in a dilemma.  How would she explain this?  The real Olga never came back. She died in Africa, and her body and papers were burned because of the jungle fever.

To stall for time, she said slowly: “I can explain this.”

Authors note: I dedicate this story of my aunt and to my 18 family members from Berlin who did not survive the Holocaust.

Charlie Liebert’s short story about his grandmother at 15-18 in 1899. Helene [Hel-lain-a] at Mama Henney’s Boarding School for Girls.

Recently, I’ve written three stories that tell my family’s history in Germany before my dad, and his mother came to the US in 1928.  When I turned 16 on September 2, 1957, I got my driver’s license and three weeks later my first car, a seven-year-old 1950 Ford.  I could now travel on my own.  My father’s mother, Helene Quandt Liebert Gohmann, lived in the small town, Copiague, 10 miles east of where we lived in Amityville.  Her health, at 74, was faltering because she had only one functioning lung and smoked cigarettes and cigars secretly.  My dad suggested my grandmother help me with the German I was studying by having lunch together on Saturdays.  We would speak German, and I would (secretly) monitor her health.  She knew, of course, precisely what I was doing, but she loved telling me stories about her life and speaking German, so she didn’t object to my visits.  So, began a 2½-year adventure learning about my family and their living in Germany.  The story highlighted today comes from those dialogues. When my grandmother, Helene, was 15 she was sent to Northern Italy to an all-girls school to recover from Tuberculous.  This story captures her three years at Mama Henny’s Boarding School for Girls.   Teenage girls love this story

Helene was 15, living with her family in Berlin.  Her great-grandfather, a high-ranking aristocrat left France in 1788 and moved with the family’s wealth to Germany. They had lived in Berlin ever since.  In late 1897 her world was shattered when the doctor said: “You have TB!” which was an almost certain death sentence. She looked forward to a great inheritance, but now she had TB. Would she live to have a wonderful life or die in her youth?  Her father, Herr Quandt, found a school in northern Italy, near Milan, that took aristocratic girls with lung diseases.  Many returned home after three years at Mama Henney’s Boarding School for Girls in good health. Both the climate and the environment of study seemed to help to heal the girls.  Helene, her sister Eva and her best friend Bette embarked on a three-year adventure to school in northern Italy.  Helene is their story of life and death, joy, and sorrow, Illness and health, leadership and revenge.  Three girls would begin at Mama Henneys in 1898, but in 1901 only two would return to Berlin.   This story is the recollections of real events from the life of the author’s grandmother.

Charlie Liebert’s first novel “Yellowstone’s Child” is on Kindle and in Print.

If Yellowstone’s Child, a fictional novel, were a movie, it would be rated “PG.” At about 150, pages it is a GREAT read for teens.  Readers complain that once started they weren’t able to put it down.  There are two underlying messages in Yellowstone’s Child.  First, all my characters are human. None of them is perfect. So, the reader will recognize humankind’s sinful imperfection. It is certain every one of us is NOT infallible. Second, as the plot unfolds, it shows life’s uncertainty and unpredictability. Since, as a Christian, I won’t use sex or violence to attract readers I opt for drama, plot reversals and “the story” within the story to keep the reader’s interest.  One of my first readers complained: “Yellowstone’s Child made me cry five times, twice for sadness, three times for joy.”   It’s that kind of a story!

Yellowstone’s Child’s central theme is personal identity, how one answers the question, “Who am I?”  The story begins when a married couple, Sam and Gloria Graham, chicken farmers from Mississippi, lose their ten-year-old daughter, Sally, to brain cancer.  After her death, they plan to sell their Mississippi farm and to move to Nebraska.  Before selling, to help recover from their daughter’s death; they take a short vacation in February to Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming.  At the same time, at Yellowstone, three cousins from the Johanson family reunion fall into a river partially fed by hot springs.  Two get right out but the third, Sarah, hits her head and floats away on her back downstream.

The Grahams rescue her and discover she has complete amnesia so, they kidnap her and take back to Mississippi to replace their dead daughter, Sally.  Yellowstone Park Rangers and Sarah’s family search the Boiling, and Yellowstone Rivers but do not recover a body.  Sarah is eventually declared dead.  In Mississippi, the Grahams inherit significant wealth, move to Nebraska, change their identities through a political bribe and move again to Ventura CA as Sam, Gloria, and Sally Johnson.  Sarah, still with complete amnesia, enters an all-girls private school that specializes in preparing girls for careers in movies and TV.  She starts in 6th grade at Ventura Private School for Girls and graduates seven years later.  During each school year, 6th through 12th, another secret about her identity develops that has to be kept by her parents.  After graduating from VPSG, she earns a BA in Music, Theater, and Dance from Cal State.  She obtains a starring role in the new TV series DETECTIVES LIVE as Detective Elaine Scott.  About to finish her Masters, she has an auto accident on her way home, bumps her head and suddenly vivid memories of her life before she was ten return.  She confronts her “parents,” and they admit to kidnapping her so, she begins to search for her real identity.  She asks, “Who am I? Sarah, Sally, Elaine. Johanson, Graham, Johnson, or Detective Scott.”  She concludes, NO! She’s Yellowstone’s Child!  The Appendix contains a timeline & list of characters.  If you respond by email to this blog, you can buy a copy for $6.00 plus actual shipping cost.
