For the last two weeks, I’ve blogged a series dealing with the nature of blood, and it’s portrayal of Spiritual Truth. Blood in Scripture is the source of life: “the life of the flesh is in the blood.” Blood sacrifices were used to atone for sin and in rites of purification, and finally, the blood of Christ brings everlasting life to those that believe. The three-fold nature of blood is 1) plasma (mostly water), 2) red cells (the bearers of life, oxygen) and the 3) Immune and protection system (clotting agents and immune system components). Today, I’ll deal with the red blood cells, the carriers of life, which are the carriers of life bringing life-giving oxygen to the cells.
None of the body cells can remain alive without a continuous supply of oxygen. Every part of the body MUST be in contact with the blood to live, without that contact, a cell will die. Our body is made up of about 30 to 75 trillion cells. Remember the rule of eights; air/oxygen is only 8 minutes.
There are between 400 to 500 million molecules of hemoglobin in each red blood cell, and each one is a single individual constructed in the inner, most protected part of the body, the bone marrow. It works in the blood for about 120 days and then is taken apart in the spleen to recycle its materials.
The RBCs carry life to the whole body. Each RBCs is an independent individual. In their short lifespan, they dedicated to bringing life to others. Without the oxygen they carry the body will die. These characteristics of RBCs illustrate the truth of the Gospel.
Individuals take the gospel, which is life, to others. Romans 10:14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? ..’As it is written, how beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!
As believers we are dedicated to a single purpose, to bring life to others, so we should be single-minded in taking the Gospel to others. Only oxygen can give life, so the blood of Christ is the only way to salvation. Anything else brings death. For example see Matthew 19:29
Blood and life in the body are like the vine and branches analogy Jesus used. John 15:4-6 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye, abide in me. I am the vine; ye are the branches: He that abides in me, and I in him, the same brings forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. If a man abides not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.
Life comes through Christ alone! God has called us to carry the Good News to ALL we encounter, as the RBC brings life to all the body.
