Salvation Illustrated by Lazarus’ Raising!

Jesus raising of Lazarus from the dead in John 11:17-44 illustrates how God accomplishessalvation. Humankind is dead in their sin and unable to save themselves from God’s righteous judgment and condemnation. God saves men by first making them alive to hear by the work of the Holy Spirit. Then they respond to the gospel communicated to them by another person.

Lazarus is dead four days. His body has begun to decay. It stinks!  His body physically can’t come back to life by any natural process. All people are dead in their sin and unable to hear! Dead men cannot hear or be awakened.  They are DEAD!!

Jesus comes to the grave and calls Lazarus by name. But his body can’t live! How can he respond? His body is rotting and stinking. He’s been dead four days! So, the power of God comes on his body and restores it to a condition of life.  He can now hear Christ’s call. All the death and decay is removed by God’s power. His bodyis in a state of life with awareness. The Holy Spirit has brought life, consciousness and open ears.  Jesus spoke about open ears to hear three times in the parable of the sower. “He who has ears to hear, let him hear …”  God made Lazarus’ body alive.  He is aware of his surroundings, and his ears are open to hearing the call of Jesus.

Thus the first action in salvation is God preparing a person, who is dead and making them alive so they can hear the gospel. God alone can do this. Dead men, in their sin, cannot respond to a gospel call without God acting first.  That is why we must always pray for God to move before we witness to Christ’s transforming power. Dead men cannot, will not and do not hear us!  God works first!

Lazarus is now alive and aware, lying on the cold gravestone, and hears Christ’s call.  He knows he is lying in the grave, so the first thing he does in response is get up and walk out. It’s man’s responsibility to respond to the gospel, but God uses human agencyto complete this process.  Men bring the gospel to other men!

Now he walks outof the grave still encumbered by grave wrappings, which represent his sin and past life. Although his sin debt, the penalty of death has been fully paidby Jesus, his lifestyle, habits, etc. are all still with him. Others must help him shed those things.  Unwrapping him is a picture of discipleship.  One of the best ways to disciple new believers is the “Operation Timothy” program available from members of CBMC (Christian Business Men’s Connection). Interested? charlie@sixdaycreation.com.

If you are a Christian then at a moment in time, after you were physically born, you were born again when God made you spiritually alive and gave you ears to hear.  Then, you listened to the Gospel call and responded sealing your salvation in Christ.

Newspaper Article “Liberated Lieberts” Jesus Rescues US!

My blog this week is a newspaper article I recently discovered published 18 years ago. It’s longer than my usual blog but worth reading.  I’m posting it because it dramatically explains Terry and my salvation and our call to Christ.  Note: This article originally appeared in the September 15, 2000 edition of the Charlotte World (North Carolina, USA) newspaper written by Paul Chesser.  https://answersingenesis.org/ministry-news/ministry/liberated-lieberts/

Greensboro NC—Charlie Liebert’s idea of a good time back in New Jersey was to drink beer with a bunch of buddies and mock Billy Graham on television.

A self-described “atheistic evolutionist,” Liebert would ridicule the fact that he and his friends were “sinners.” Despite the foolishness of the times and circumstances though, he says it still had an effect on him.  “The point was, I heard the Gospel go in,” he said.

The former chemist from Greensboro has repented to the point where he teaches creation science workshops, contracting regularly with the ministry Answers in Genesis. He even looks scientific, with receding hairline, a full, neatly trimmed beard and rounded glasses. The name “Liebert” gives the impression that the stereotypical German laboratory accent might tumble from his lips, but his dialect is distinctly Long Island.

Liebert grew up in New York as the son of German immigrants. His father, who was half-Jewish, emigrated from his mother country at the age of 13 in 1928. Liebert’s grandfather was a German officer in World War I.

Attending public school on Long Island, Liebert said science teaching indoctrinated him into evolutionist beliefs. He followed his parents to Methodist church but dropped out at age 16 when the pulpit preaching on the evils of alcohol contradicted what he knew about the lifestyles of much of the congregation.

Most of Liebert’s chemistry career covered his 27 years with Ciba-Geigy, whom he started working for in 1967. Six years later the company relocated him to Greensboro, and by then he and his wife, Terry, had two small children under age three. Not long after arriving in North Carolina, Terry decided to become involved in church again after a long absence, mostly for the children’s sake. Terry’s upbringing had been solidly Catholic, but she started attending an Episcopal church, which she enjoyed for its social aspects.

“It was a good middle ground for an ex-Catholic and Methodist,” she said.

Charlie would have none of it, so Terry would leave the children home with him on Sunday mornings. A few months of child-care responsibilities, however, inspired Charlie to start going to church with Terry.

At the same time, they experienced severe marital strains. Charlie succumbed to temptations with alcohol, and in 1977 they started talking about divorce. By then, his worldview had progressed from atheist to agnostic—mild progress.

Nearing his low point, Charlie attended a retreat in Asheville in March 1977. It was there where a workshop speaker, and the Holy Spirit, confronted him with three questions that he couldn’t answer:

What’s your purpose in life?          What does life mean?         Where are you going?

“I could see myself going down the tubes,” said Charlie. “So, I said, ‘God, if you’re there, come in; I need some help.’”

At that point, he said he was completely confused intellectually. Everything he had ever learned about science and evolution was a contradiction to what his new spiritual life represented. “I had to renew my mind,” he said.

Charlie returned home on fire for God and immediately began engrossing himself in the Bible and other books to straighten out his scientific puzzlement. Meanwhile, Terry felt left in the dust. She was never interested in science and resented all his reading.

“It was an immediate change in him,” said Terry. “But he didn’t know how to share the gospel with me. I was in such darkness.”

It began almost two months of spiritual depression for Terry, with most of her time alone spent “constantly crying.” Her best friend moved away in April, and with her marriage in tatters, she felt desperately alone. Her Catholic background and recent Episcopalianism collided in her mind, with neither making sense. She said: “The Lord was working in me.”

“Being a Catholic, you’re always in hell. I only saw flames in my mind,” she said. “And the Episcopal Church wasn’t looking for you to be born again, but for spiritual renewal.”

Two months after Charlie’s conversion, Terry traveled to a women’s retreat. It also turned out to be a catalytic event for her turning to Christ. Instead of merely understanding that Christ died for the sins of the whole world, Terry realized that He was her personal savior.

Christ filled the void of the friend who moved away and began healing their near-broken marriage.

“Being in Christ truly made us one spiritually,” remembered Terry. “Because we were so excited about the Lord, it was instant.”

Charlie continued to toil for Ciba-Geigy and read, read, read. Three years passed before he could be peaceful with the creationist explanation for the origin of life. He calls himself a “pragmatic scientist,” and believes he is uniquely qualified to teach creation because “I understand the other side of the issue,” he said.

He began teaching science in 1982 at the request of a homeschooling mother and ended up developing creation workshops, which he taught as side work. His workshops even passed muster with Ken Ham, Answers in Genesis’s executive director, who began contracting Liebert to lead workshops and seminars on their behalf in 1994. That year, Ciba-Geigy cut back on their workforce, and Liebert took early retirement so he could teach creation as his primary occupation.

REVISED: The Charlie and Terry now, in 2018 are members of Redeemer OPC in Carlisle Pennsylvania. His ministry has excelled as well, with Charlie teaching his materials around the country. He has spoken throughout the Carolinas and around the Southeast.  For ten years, 1995-2005, Charlie produced his television show, “Creation Foundation Explanation,” on local cable access in Greensboro.

“The thing that is most frustrating as a creation scientist is the outright lying the evolutionists do to convince the public,” said Charlie. “It’s bad science, and it’s lies.”

My Testimony; why clear and logical thinking Atheists should become Agnostic.

During March I’ve given my testimony at three CBMC (Christian Business Men’s Connection) outreach events in Carlisle, York, and Chambersburg and I’ll be doing it again in Gettysburg next Wednesday at Dunlap’s Restaurant. I became a Christian at 35, converted from “hardcore” Atheism.  As I’ve spoken each time, during the Q&A, a common reaction has been: “Explain WHY you said Atheism is an illogical and impossible philosophy.  My Answer: No one can say:  “There is no God.” because a person must be omniscience to make that statement and NO man is!

To the Atheist: “Be honest with yourself.  Your belief that “there is NO God” is a FAITH statement based on your BELIEFS, not on any proof!” The absence of evidence is NOT proof.  Besides, proving that negative is impossible.  For example, I say: “There are no unicorns alive on Earth today.”  Can I prove that? NO!  I’d have to be able to see every square foot of the planet at the same time to be sure, and even then I might miss it because of the animals camouflage.  I’d need Planetary Omniscience to know for sure there are no Unicorns.

Since no man has perfect, absolute knowledge, the best an Atheist can say is “I don’t and can’t know if there is a God.”  He can’t say for certain “there is no God” because he’s not omniscient!  When the Atheist realizes this untenable, logical dilemma, he should flee to Agnosticism. Both Atheism and Agnosticism deny God—the Atheist with absurd certainty and the Agnostic with skeptical, uncertainty.  The Agnostic’s view is a confession of ignorance NOT knowledge or truth.  In the Bible, Romans addresses this as “suppressing the truth.”  Agnostics do not deny the existence of God but hold that one cannot know for sure whether or not God exists.

Ask the Agnostic: “Is there a God?” They typically reply, “I don’t know if there is a God or not, but if there is, he is not relevant to my life.” Most would probably add, “no one can know for sure if there is or is not a God, but it doesn’t matter.”

Nineteenth-century British scientist Thomas H. Huxley created the term “Agnostic” for himself in 1870.  He believed that only material phenomena were objects of exact knowledge. He made up the word from the prefix a, meaning “without, not,” as in amoral, and the noun Gnostic. Gnostic is related to the Greek word gnōsis, “knowledge,” which was used by early Christian writers to mean “higher, esoteric knowledge of spiritual things.”  In coining the term Agnostic, Huxley was considering a group of his fellow intellectuals—“ists,” as he called them—who eagerly embraced various doctrines or theories like Evolution that explained the Universe without God.

Astronomer Carl Sagan, a self-identified Agnostic, said, “The Cosmos is all that is or was or ever will be. Our feeblest contemplations of the Cosmos stir us. There is a tingling in the spine, a catch in the voice, a faint sensation, as if a distant memory, of falling from a height. We know we are approaching the greatest of mysteries.”

Charlie Liebert’s short story about his grandmother at 15-18 in 1899. Helene [Hel-lain-a] at Mama Henney’s Boarding School for Girls.

Recently, I’ve written three stories that tell my family’s history in Germany before my dad, and his mother came to the US in 1928.  When I turned 16 on September 2, 1957, I got my driver’s license and three weeks later my first car, a seven-year-old 1950 Ford.  I could now travel on my own.  My father’s mother, Helene Quandt Liebert Gohmann, lived in the small town, Copiague, 10 miles east of where we lived in Amityville.  Her health, at 74, was faltering because she had only one functioning lung and smoked cigarettes and cigars secretly.  My dad suggested my grandmother help me with the German I was studying by having lunch together on Saturdays.  We would speak German, and I would (secretly) monitor her health.  She knew, of course, precisely what I was doing, but she loved telling me stories about her life and speaking German, so she didn’t object to my visits.  So, began a 2½-year adventure learning about my family and their living in Germany.  The story highlighted today comes from those dialogues. When my grandmother, Helene, was 15 she was sent to Northern Italy to an all-girls school to recover from Tuberculous.  This story captures her three years at Mama Henny’s Boarding School for Girls.   Teenage girls love this story

Helene was 15, living with her family in Berlin.  Her great-grandfather, a high-ranking aristocrat left France in 1788 and moved with the family’s wealth to Germany. They had lived in Berlin ever since.  In late 1897 her world was shattered when the doctor said: “You have TB!” which was an almost certain death sentence. She looked forward to a great inheritance, but now she had TB. Would she live to have a wonderful life or die in her youth?  Her father, Herr Quandt, found a school in northern Italy, near Milan, that took aristocratic girls with lung diseases.  Many returned home after three years at Mama Henney’s Boarding School for Girls in good health. Both the climate and the environment of study seemed to help to heal the girls.  Helene, her sister Eva and her best friend Bette embarked on a three-year adventure to school in northern Italy.  Helene is their story of life and death, joy, and sorrow, Illness and health, leadership and revenge.  Three girls would begin at Mama Henneys in 1898, but in 1901 only two would return to Berlin.   This story is the recollections of real events from the life of the author’s grandmother.

Rosemarie, Kristallnacht Transformation. How my twice Jewish aunt, with a Jewish father and a deceased Jewish husband, survived the Holocaust in Germany 1937-1945 by becoming her Gentile cousin.

Recently I have written three stories that relate to my family’s history in Germany before my dad and his mother came to the US in 1928. Of course, she knew exactly what I was doing, but she loved telling me stories about her life and speaking German, so she didn’t object.  So began a 2½-year adventure learning about my family and their life in Germany.  During my Junior year my Aunt Rosemarie came to visit for 6 months, so I heard her stories too.  The story highlighted today come from those dialogues.  Even though it was more than 50 years ago I can still see in my mind’s eye her describing the Gestapo interrogation.  It still gives me chills.  Find it on Kindle or Amazon

This is the amazing story of how my Jewish aunt survived the Holocaust in Germany. Rosemarie Liebert was twice a Jew.  She was the daughter of a Jew and she was married to a Jew.  It’s Berlin, Germany, November 12, 1938 the day after Kristallnacht.  Her uncles Jewelry store has been looted.  All 19 members of her three uncle’s families disappeared.  She knew now she had to find a way to hide.  The “escape bag” could save her by letting her become her dead cousin Olga.   Olga died in Africa with no record of her death in Germany.

This is the story of how Rosemarie, survives the Holocaust as the gentile Olga Quandt.  The Gestapo’s pursuit is relentless.  Authors note: I dedicate this story of my aunt to these 19 family members who did not survive the Holocaust.

Berlin, downtown, November 12, 1938, 1:15 AM.  Rosemarie stopped at the corner and looked down the street toward her uncles Hans and Fritz’s Jewelry store.  As she expected the windows were broken and the glass and other remnants of the previous night’s looting were still on the sidewalk.  On the far corner two Gestapo stood under the street light smoking.  She recognized them by the “funny S” on their uniforms as her dead Jewish husband; Albert had called those shoulder markings. Looking back across the street she noticed the sign with the store name was smashed on the sidewalk.  The other advertising sign yhat usually hung in the window “Diamanten und Gold zu verkaufen” (Diamonds and Gold For Sale), was on the sidewalk below the window.  Painted on it in large, red letters was the word JUDEN!

Charlie Liebert’s Testimony Shared Today in Carlisle, Pennsylvania at CBMC Outreach.

At thirty-five, in Greensboro, NC, I became a Christian. My transformation from Atheism was so sudden, surprising, and dramatic I had to unlearn and relearn almost everything I believed. All my presuppositions changed in a moment. Everything I thought I knew about humankind and God was wrong! The most challenging intellectual struggle I faced was giving up the theory of Evolution. I had been taught Evolution as fact and accepted it because I thought, “My teachers wouldn’t lie to me.” Besides, it made a lot of sense the way it was presented. I knew now that Genesis and the Bible did not fit with what I’d learned in my science classes. As a new believer, I was confronted with the biblical truth of the Genesis account of Creation in direct opposition to the Evolution I loved. It became clear there was no evolution in the first chapters of Genesis.

An intense intellectual conflict developed in my mind. If God created in six literal days, then Evolution could not be true! For the first time, I looked on the other side of the question. “Where did I come from? Why am I here? Where am I going?” I read all the books I could find about Biblical Creation: Genesis Flood, The Lie, Scientific Creationism, and many more. It took three years for me to evolve from an Atheistic Evolutionist into a Young Earth Creationist (YEC), passing through day-age, gap theory, and Old Earth. God’s Word and science fit together! God created in six literal days!

This newfound confidence in Scripture spurred me on to study more and more Christian Apologetics. I wanted to be able to explain to unbelievers why Christianity was true. By my fifth year as a Christian, I developed a keen understanding of Biblical Creation, but I grew less inclined to witness as again and again; I confronted questions from unbelievers I couldn’t answer. All those other questions from non-Christians I encountered made me stumble more and more until I began avoiding witnessing for Christ.  I tackle this fear of responding to these questions with the personal evangelism strategy in my first book “Always Be Ready to Give an Answer,” Jesus often did not answer questions but responded with questions to uncover their presuppositions.  This questioning strategy allows you to determine a person’s willingness to hear the Gospel by measuring their spiritual temperature as cold, lukewarm or hot. Then, you can share the Gospel with your testimony, and you still haven’t answered the original question. You intentionally get to the Gospel first after you’ve assessed their receptiveness to the Gospel.

My ministry grew as I taught Biblical Creation to home-school support groups, churches, and Christian schools. I even worked for Answers in Genesis for a short time. My ministry Web page (http://www.sixdaycreation.com) included the ability of visitors to ask questions for which I wrote answers and published them in my second book, “ANSWERS For: “The Hope That Is In You.”

Charlie Liebert’s first novel “Yellowstone’s Child” is on Kindle and in Print.

If Yellowstone’s Child, a fictional novel, were a movie, it would be rated “PG.” At about 150, pages it is a GREAT read for teens.  Readers complain that once started they weren’t able to put it down.  There are two underlying messages in Yellowstone’s Child.  First, all my characters are human. None of them is perfect. So, the reader will recognize humankind’s sinful imperfection. It is certain every one of us is NOT infallible. Second, as the plot unfolds, it shows life’s uncertainty and unpredictability. Since, as a Christian, I won’t use sex or violence to attract readers I opt for drama, plot reversals and “the story” within the story to keep the reader’s interest.  One of my first readers complained: “Yellowstone’s Child made me cry five times, twice for sadness, three times for joy.”   It’s that kind of a story!

Yellowstone’s Child’s central theme is personal identity, how one answers the question, “Who am I?”  The story begins when a married couple, Sam and Gloria Graham, chicken farmers from Mississippi, lose their ten-year-old daughter, Sally, to brain cancer.  After her death, they plan to sell their Mississippi farm and to move to Nebraska.  Before selling, to help recover from their daughter’s death; they take a short vacation in February to Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming.  At the same time, at Yellowstone, three cousins from the Johanson family reunion fall into a river partially fed by hot springs.  Two get right out but the third, Sarah, hits her head and floats away on her back downstream.

The Grahams rescue her and discover she has complete amnesia so, they kidnap her and take back to Mississippi to replace their dead daughter, Sally.  Yellowstone Park Rangers and Sarah’s family search the Boiling, and Yellowstone Rivers but do not recover a body.  Sarah is eventually declared dead.  In Mississippi, the Grahams inherit significant wealth, move to Nebraska, change their identities through a political bribe and move again to Ventura CA as Sam, Gloria, and Sally Johnson.  Sarah, still with complete amnesia, enters an all-girls private school that specializes in preparing girls for careers in movies and TV.  She starts in 6th grade at Ventura Private School for Girls and graduates seven years later.  During each school year, 6th through 12th, another secret about her identity develops that has to be kept by her parents.  After graduating from VPSG, she earns a BA in Music, Theater, and Dance from Cal State.  She obtains a starring role in the new TV series DETECTIVES LIVE as Detective Elaine Scott.  About to finish her Masters, she has an auto accident on her way home, bumps her head and suddenly vivid memories of her life before she was ten return.  She confronts her “parents,” and they admit to kidnapping her so, she begins to search for her real identity.  She asks, “Who am I?
