The Absolute Laws of Science Refute Atheism and Materialism.

You’ve heard Your Atheist, Humanist or Materialist relative or friend say: “I only believe in what I can see. Faith is for fools! The only reality is the material world. There is no supernatural! Everything is relative! There are no absolutes!”

Our world is full of people that deny the supernatural. They make explicit statements about the world and act as if they were questions because they are looking for a response from us.   In the last two weeks, we explored immaterial opposites and history to demonstrate that people who claim they only believe in the material world believe in many things that can’t be sensed. Today we’ll look at the third of these, non-material arguments, absolute scientific laws.

Absolute Scientific Laws

I: “I only believe in what I can see. My five senses tell me all I need to and can know. There is no supernatural; only the material world exists. Faith in something you can’t see is foolish.”

Me: “Do you believe in gravity, the laws of aerodynamics, or thermodynamics?”

I: (Affirms.)

Me: “Do these laws change?”

I: “I don’t know.”

Me: “Have you ever seen them change or know of any time or place they did?”

I: “No.”

Me: “Then we can accept they don’t change. These laws are absolute. The universe has some scientific laws that don’t change.”

I: “But there may be a place in the universe where they do change.”

Me: “That’s an argument from silence and is faulty logic. You are begging the question!”

I: “Okay, there are laws about the physical universe that don’t change.”

Me: There are also rules of morality that don’t change, as we saw above when we talked about justice last week. Your belief that everything is relative is false. There are absolutes in both the physical world and in morality. You agree to believe in things that can’t be sensed, you accept the testimony of others about events you didn’t experience, and the now you agree the universe contains absolutes that are always true. Your view of a purely materialistic reality is false. What you believe about the world isn’t true! None of the things you said you consider to be true are true. You have a worldview that is inconsistent, illogical, and false. I say with confidence; you need to find real answers to your view of reality. My Christian worldview is real, and demonstrable and it contains good news and bad news. First, the bad news: There is a God, who created all things, sustains all things and brings justice to all things. That justice carries a sentence that includes your death and condemnation. No human can escape death! You’re lost and without hope when you stand before that just God! Now the good news: God has provided a way to satisfy his justice, not by anything you can do, but by believing that Jesus paid the debt you could not pay by dying on the cross. Reconciliation to God takes place when you put your trust in Jesus.

Atheists, Agnostics & Materialists have FAITH because they believe History.

These statements are easy to answer and often provide an opportunity to present the gospel. Materialist declarations challenge Christians to spar verbally. Don’t shy away from them; they will give you a chance to share the Gospel.

In the United States today there are many people, even in churches, who believe these materialistic imperatives from Atheism, Agnosticism, Humanism, Materialism, and Marginal Christianity.   All of these worldviews are described in “Worldviews and Religions” from the book Always Be Ready to Give an Answer!

Last week we explored immaterial opposites like hot-cold, wind, and light-darkness to demonstrate that people who claim they only believe in the material world believe in many things that can’t be sensed. Today we’ll look at the second of these non-material arguments, the Historical Narrative dialogue. Our whole understanding of history is based on others writings and experiences and not on our knowledge. WE believe in history by faith in the ones who communicated it to us.

Historical Narratives

I: “I only believe in what I can see. My five senses tell me all I need to and can know. There is no supernatural; only the material world exists. Faith in something you can’t see is foolish.”

Me: “Do you believe George Washington was a real person? Did you ever see him? You only have the testimony of books written by other men.”

I: “Of course.”

Me: “Do you believe there was a Roman Empire? Do you believe two world wars occurred in the twentieth century?” (You can use as many examples as you can think of, just don’t use any events that happened during the person’s lifetime.)

I: “These things are historical events I know happened.”

Me: “You only know about past events that you didn’t witness through the testimony of others. So, you trust in something you did not see. Do you concede you believe history through the testimony of others?

I: (Affirms.)

Me: Then let me tell you some history. The life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ are the most documented events of all time. If the stories about Jesus were not true, we would know because men and women don’t sacrifice their lives for a lie. Besides the testimony of history, we have two-thousand-plus years of history to affirm Jesus’ saving power.” (Give a short testimony.) “What about you? Do you believe Jesus lived, died, and rose from the dead to bring you salvation?”

Atheists, Agnostics and Materialists have FAITH because they believe in things they can’t sense. Immaterial Opposites

Immaterial Opposites

Last week I introduced the concept that even the staunchest faith denier believes in things that are beyond their senses. Immaterial Opposites is one. Here’s dialogue to illustrate.

Atheist Inquirer: I only believe in what I can see. My five senses tell me all I need to and can know. There is no supernatural; only the material world exists. Faith in something you can’t see is foolish.

Me: So, you only believe in things in the world you can see, hear, feel, smell, or taste? Do you believe in darkness?

AI: Of course.

Me: There is no such thing as darkness. Darkness is the absence of light, but it does not exist by itself. How about the wind? Do you believe in the wind?

AI: Of course.

Me: The wind itself can’t isn’t seen; only its effects. Do you believe in cold? Cold is the absence of heat and is defined by heat. We measure temperature as heat; there is no scale to measure cold, just heat or lack of it.

AI: Many possible responses.

Me: How about good and evil? Neither one can be measured or sensed, but we know it when we see it. How do we know? Is there a human conscience?

AI: Many possible responses. (At some point in this dialogue he/she is going to ask, “Where are you going with this?” or “You are frustrating me.” So now put the pieces together.)

Me: So you do believe in many things you can’t sense. Darkness and cold are descriptions of opposites of things we can measure. We observe the effect of wind, and can measure it, but don’t see it. Evil is the absence of good, but what’s the source of good? Is morality written inside of us?

Me: A person is a professional thief. He earns his wealth by stealing from others. Now you take his wallet. How does he react? ‘Hey, what’s wrong with you? You took my wallet! That’s not right.’ What? You steal for a living, but if I steal from you it’s wrong? Why are my stealing wrong and yours okay? Yes, morality has absolute standards.

Your children do something wrong so, you confront them. They immediately look guilty but fabricate excuses or lie to escape consequences. The Family Circus cartoon depicts this behavior with the semi-invisible character “Not Me.” If you deal with children, you know all about “Not Me.”

If you accept the concept of evil, you also accept justice. Bad behavior deserves punishment. Is your behavior just the response of chemistry and electricity in your brain? What is the source of those moral ideas? The Bible teaches that every person has a built-in conscience that knows right from wrong and will bring guilt when violated. Good and evil is another immaterial concept you know and accept. Even the staunchest materialist has to accept many intangible things that can be defined but not sensed or measured. Immaterial Opposites is the first of the three flaws in materialism’s beliefs. Next week, Historical Narratives.

Atheism, Humanism & Materialism are Foolish, Everyone Believes in Things Beyond Their 5 Senses!!

These next four weekly blogs I’m going to take the gloves off to deal with those that deny the supernatural and hold that the material world is all of reality. The material in this blog is from the first chapter in my book ANSWERS For “The Hope That Is In You.”

You’ve heard Your Atheist, Humanist or Materialist relative or friend say:

“I only believe in what I can see. Faith is for fools! The only reality is the material world. There is no supernatural! Everything is relative! There are no absolutes!”

Our world is full of people that deny the supernatural. They make explicit statements about the world and act as if they were questions because they are looking for a response from the hearer. These statements are easy to answer and often provide an opportunity to present the gospel. These kinds of materialist declarations challenge Christians to spar verbally. Don’t shy away from these statements; they give you an opportunity to share the Gospel.

In the United States today there are many people, even in church, who believe these imperatives of Atheism, Agnosticism, Humanism, Materialism, and Marginal Christianity.   I describe all of these worldviews in “Worldviews and Religions” from the book Always Be Ready to Give an Answer!

There are three separate arguments to counter these beliefs: 1) immaterial opposites, 2) historical narratives and 3) absolute scientific laws. I’ll cover all three in the next weeks, showing these unbelievers how many things they believe on faith.

After I’ve presented these arguments I’ll say: “You’ve conceded 1) you believe in things you can’t sense, 2) you accept the testimony of others about events you did not experience, and 3) the universe contains absolutes that are always true. You view of reality has been falsified. What you believe about the world isn’t true! You have a worldview that is inconsistent, illogical, and false. You need to find actual answers to your view of reality. My Christian worldview is real, demonstrable, and absolute and contains good news and bad news. First, the bad news: There is a God, who created all things, sustains all things and brings justice to all things. That sentence upon all humankind includes your death and condemnation. You cannot escape death! ALL men DIE! You are lost and without hope when you stand before the justice of God! Now the good news: God has provided a way to satisfy his justice, not by anything you can do, but by believing that Jesus paid the debt you could not pay by dying in your place. Reconciliation to God happens when you put your trust in Jesus.”

Next week we’ll look in depth at the first of these arguments, Immaterial Opposites.

Some critics of these arguments will say: “Don’t call us fools!” My answer is I am only repeating God’s assessment of your worldview. Psalm 14:1 “The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt; they do abominable deeds; there is none who does good.”

Mt. St Helens & Grand Tetons Evidence for a Young Earth

I did 2 hours of radio on “Iron Sharpens Iron” http://www.ironsharpensironradio.com this week with Chris Arnzen, Buz Taylor and Dr. Tas Walker from CMI (Creation Ministries International – Creation.com). Our subject was Geology and a Young Earth. Although I mentioned these geological formations recently, based on the listener questions on ISI I wanted to cover them again. This week’s blog highlights two of the hundreds of examples in geology that point to a Young Earth.

Mt. St. Helen’s eruption is evidence for a Young Earth

When Mt. Saint Helens erupted in 1980 it produced two significant effects: 1) evidence for the rapid formation of geological features and 2) rapid erosion to form canyons.

1) Rapid Formation. Hundreds of feet of sediment were laid down in days that have the appearance of long ages of geologic time because of thousands of thin layers. In many geological texts, you’ll find each layer is counted as a yearly cycle, but here they were formed in days.

2) Rapid Erosion. A canyon formed in less than two days that is 1/40 the size of Grand Canyon and appears old. Other canyons formed in days include a river that did not cause it but is an artifact of its formation.

Fossil forests are forming in Spirit Lake that has a striking similarity in appearance to Specimen Ridge in Yellowstone Park. These events are powerful evidence that catastrophic events can occur in short periods of time rather than the traditional long geologic ages taught in colleges and universities.

The Grand Tetons are very young mountains.

If you go to Grand Teton National Park, the rangers will tell you that those mountains rose to their present position over a period of 20 million years. Over this 20 million years there is supposed to be about 20,000 feet of mountains eroded (1,000 feet per million years). When you hike in the Teton’s passes, you see many broken rocks but little sand or fine material that would indicate extended periods of erosion. The plain at the foot of these peaks contains many beautiful lakes that show a lot of exposed rock and shallow soil layers. There is no sign of the vast amount of material that should be there after 20 million years of erosion. These mountains appear to be young, not old.

Other examples are the Colorado River, Bryce Canyon, Cedar Breaks & Grand Canyon. https://answersingenesis.org/geology/grand-canyon-facts/when-and-how-did-the-grand-canyon-form/

Next time you go to a national park look around and ask the rangers questions based on the young earth model. For example: “Was the Grand Canyon caused by a lot of water and a little time instead of a lot of time and a little water?” http://charlieliebert.blog

Next week I’ll start a series that deconstructs the Materialists argument that states: “All I can believe is what I can sense.”

Share the Gospel of Jesus. You have a bad heart, record, and life. You need a new heart, record, and life.

Last week I shared my testimony of Christ’s life-changing power. After sharing your testimony the next step in the personal evangelism strategy from my book “Always Be Ready to Give an Answer! ” is called “Closure.” This week I learned another way to achieve closure at a CBMC program. Pastor Decherd Stevens from Carlisle Reformed Presbyterian Church shared “A bare bones way to present the Gospel, simple, but full-orbed and Biblical.”

1) You want to show a person’s sinful condition, and need of Christ – You have a bad heart, a bad record & a bad life.

  • You have a bad HEART – Called in Scripture: deceitful, wicked, dead and unable to do anything good. Jeremiah 17:9, Ephesians 2:1-3, John 6:44
  • You have a bad RECORD – You have sinned and are guilty: and therefore stand condemned (to death) before God. Romans 3:10-11, 6:23, John 3:36
  • You have a bad LIFE – You continue to do those things that are displeasing to God and cannot do those things, which please him. Isaiah 64:6, Romans 8:7-8

2) You want to show the only way to hope, and salvation is by faith in Christ – You need a new heart, a new record & a new life.

  • You need a new HEART – You must be born again (John 3:3), made alive (Ephesians 2:1), need to be made a new creature (Corinthians 5:17). But there is a problem; you can’t do that (Jeremiah 13:23). What do you do? Well, only God can change the heart (Ezekiel 36:26). You cry out to Jesus in faith and repentance (Ephesians 2:8). You’re in prison, and ONLY God has the key.
  • You need a new RECORD – You need to be cleansed of past sins, & you can’t do that either, but God can & will if you ask Him: Isaiah 53:6, 1 John 1:9, Hebrews 10:16f, Romans 5:1
  • You need a new LIFE – You need more than forgiveness, you need holiness (Hebrews 12:14). Your whole life needs to change; you need to start hating evil and loving what is good. You need to put off the old man and put on the new. All of these can only be done by the power of God. How does it happen? Ezekiel 36:27, Romans 8:13, 2Corinthians 5:21, 1 John 2:4

The Gospel in 1 Corinthians 15:3 “For I delivered to you…: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures…”

Learn how to start a conversation, by asking good questions. Study Biblical examples: Jesus, give me a drink…: Philip, Do you understand…: Peter, this is what Joel said.

In many US places, everybody thinks they are Christian, so I ask questions like: Are you a Christian? Do you have a church home? Has anyone shared the gospel with you? Do you sense that the Lord is working in your heart? Do you have any desire for God to take away your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh? Would you like to ask him to change you right now?

Give Your Christian Testimony! Charlie Liebert’s Example!

I have been teaching personal evangelism to Christians for years. One of the most important parts of being able to witness to unbelievers is to “be able to give an answer for the hope that is in you.” To be effective prepare a short, five-minute, testimony to carry out your obligation to witness to the life-changing power of Jesus. My blog today is my five-minute testimony.

I grew up in a small town Amityville on Long Island, New York, with my two sisters. My parents took us to church almost every Sunday. In Sunday school, we learned many Bible stories, but I never remember hearing the Gospel. At sixteen years old, in church one Sunday, morning the pastor was droning on about the evil of drinking. I knew that most of the adults sitting around me had been at the Amityville Yacht Club season-opening the night before and had consumed a lot of beer, wine, and liquor. How foolish, I thought. These people don’t believe a word of what’s said! Hypocrites! I was very aware of the hypocrisy of church members, and from that moment I shut off anything the church had to say. Thus, I began my descent into Atheism. By the time I received by BS degree in 1966, I was a hardcore Atheist.

In 1967 I married, Theresa Lee Perrone. We had two children, Keith and Melanie, and in 1973 our family came to Greensboro, North Carolina. Since we left our families in New York and New Jersey, Sundays became a long day. Terry met some neighbors decided to attend an Episcopal church, leaving me home with the children. After several weeks, I also decided to go to that church because; managing two young children at home was difficult for me.

My new life in Greensboro was falling apart quickly. My marriage was faltering, I had a drinking problem, a pornography addiction, and worked for a man I hated. The church we attended held a weekend retreat in Asheville, North Carolina, in 1977, and both Terry and I felt it would be good for me to get away for that short time. As the weekend progressed, I was confronted with the Gospel. Was I a lost sinner? That was very clear to me by the way my life was going, but what could I do about it? Nothing myself, but it became apparent that my sin debt was paid by Jesus’ death on the cross. He could give me new life! Wow! Everything changed. I came back to Greensboro a new person. Terry was converted three months later, and Christ would begin to heal our marriage, change my behavior, and give me a new worldview. Atheism was trashed for a relationship with the living God. The changes in my life were so dramatic my fellow workers joked about the old Charlie vs. the new Charlie. I would describe myself today as “a lost sinner saved by grace.” From a hard-core Atheist, I “evolved” into a Bible believing Christian.

Now, prepare yours and practice it with your believing friends.
